Buildings, bridges, MEP systems, computers, aircrafts… the list can go on but none of these would exist without engineers. These experts have a crucial role in developing the spaces, systems, and technology we use every day. As Henry G., VP of Pre-Construction Development for SitelogIQ West, puts it, “Engineering is where science meets society.”

Engineers Week is a great time to celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world; raise awareness around the need for engineers, technicians, and technologists; and engage and encourage students to pursue a career in engineering. As we honor engineers at SitelogIQ and beyond, we want to share an in-depth look into the profession and celebrate the amazing impact that our team of engineers has on our projects, the people we serve in our local communities, and the planet as a whole.

A day in the life of an engineer

From civil and mechanical, to biomedical and environmental, engineers lend their expertise and knowledge to a wide array of different industries and professional fields. In the architectural, engineering, and construction industry, engineers are primarily responsible for managing projects by ensuring they’re built in accordance with designs, plans, and specifications.

At SitelogIQ, our team includes Electrical, Commissioning, Energy, HVAC, Development, and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Engineers. Our engineers act as our customers’ advocates throughout each stage of a project, helping to achieve programmatic, efficiency, and sustainability goals while ensuring we exceed expectations. Our Director of Engineering for SitelogIQ, David Hickey, explained, “We work on projects through the full spectrum, from design development through construction documents and construction administration.”

Our engineers are also responsible for:

  • Conducting surveys of customer facilities and assessing the current condition, operational performance, and deficiencies of the building systems and infrastructure
  • Guiding customers in project prioritization to improve functionality, operational performance, and facility efficiency
  • Revising, reviewing, and coordinating construction documents
  • Developing solutions to challenging systems with architecture and engineering project design teams
  • Creating and conducting functional testing of equipment
  • Performing on-site energy use and energy efficiency assessments to report findings and make recommendations to customers
  • Guiding, facilitating, and tracking energy management activities to achieve energy savings
  • Researching new products and solutions and present them to the team

Beyond the jobsite, our engineers also mentor and train junior-level team members to help them build upon their skills and expertise to set them on a strong path to success.

“Scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that never has been.”

– Theodore von Karman, Mathematician, Aerospace Engineer, and Physicist

The difference engineers make at SitelogIQ

Engineers play such a critical role in helping our communities grow, especially at SitelogIQ, as they are the vital link between our team and ongoing energy management and sustainability programs in local communities throughout the United States.

“The fact that our work is on the K-12 market is an inspiration at work. I enjoy being able to improve the learning conditions for kids, since education is the first step to improve everyone’s life and allow the kids to follow their dreams,” said Karla Villamizar, Project Development Manager.

The role our engineers play has a direct impact on the lives of students, teachers, patients/doctors, families, companies, and our neighbors by making buildings better. They’re responsible for creating indoor environments that are healthier, safer, more energy efficient, resilient, and sustainable.

Our growing team of engineers also helps drive our mission to better our planet by helping our customers lower their carbon footprint, energy usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. The work matters.

“At SitelogIQ, we take great pride in the work we do, and none of it would be possible without our strong group of engineers,” said Kelly Schuller, SitelogIQ CEO. “It’s incredible to watch these talented men and women find and deliver creative solutions to improve outdated buildings and positively change the lives of our clients and communities while significantly reducing their carbon footprint.”

“Science can amuse and fascinate us all, but it is engineering that changes the world.”

– Isaac Asimov, Writer and Professor of Biochemistry

Educating the next generation of engineers

With a strong commitment to helping educate and grow future generations, our team often partners with school districts across the country to provide in-person and remote educational lessons that emphasize the “E” in their STEM-based curriculum. These discussions concentrate on how our engineers lend their expertise to our projects, their experiences and career path, passion for the job, education requirements, and the impact they can make on the world as engineers.

“SitelogIQ has been an extraordinary partner in our Engineering Academy. Every year they work with our students, going through and conducting an energy audit of our district. The culminating activity is they present this audit to our board. The learning that takes place on our student’s behalf, is just extraordinary.”

– Yolanda Valdez, Cutler-Orosi Unified School District, California

Internship programs are a great opportunity for those new to the workforce to deepen their knowledge and gain first-hand experience as they launch their career. For companies, interns can bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the team to help improve their processes and practices.

At SitelogIQ, we’re proud to work with interns throughout each of our business units and across the country. Our internship opportunities can range from Operations, IT, Engineering, Development, Construction Management, Marketing, and more.

Here’s a deeper look into our Internship Program:

Day in the Life of a SIQ Intern

With opportunities that span business units and departments, we strive to create a robust internship program at SitelogIQ. Each position is designed to provide hands-on experience in areas that help drive success for our company and our customers throughout the K-12, higher education, local/state government, healthcare, multifamily, manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, automotive, retail, and industrial markets. In their positions, our interns gain real-life experience, working on projects that help us make buildings and communities better through energy efficiency and facility improvements.

Just this summer, we welcomed 19 interns. We recently connected with them to hear, firsthand, about their internship experience:

I am on-site overseeing an active construction site, while also doing a few project manager tasks. Internships I’ve had in the past didn’t give me many tasks to do. Here at SitelogIQ, I am given numerous tasks each day, and I feel like an important part of the project. I enjoy this internship because it allows me to learn many things that I would never learn in a classroom setting. Each day I gain experience that I can use later in my career.

– Matthew B., Northeast Construction Management Intern

In my day-to-day, I help all the engineers with various projects. That includes anything from putting together install drawings to coding in Excel VBA to create new tools for the team.

– Reaves G., Healthcare Solution Developer Intern

My day-to-day roles consist of supporting team members with help in the field and office, writing daily logs for three different schools in the Pennridge School District, and helping with the communication of information and questions between the contractors and school officials/employees.

– Shane K., Northeast Operations Intern

In my day-to-day, I have primarily focused on project estimation and proposals for EV chargers, but I have also spent a lot of time researching municipality codes and building requirements, as well as rebate programs. I am excited daily by working with bright minds who strive to move SitelogIQ forward. I have also had real responsibilities and deliverables, which makes me value the work I put into each of my projects.

– Griffin F., C&I Operations Support Intern

Interns also benefit from building mentor relationships throughout the company as well as participating in ongoing trainings and learning opportunities, such as our IQ University program where they meet with the Senior Leadership Team and learn more about our history, teams, initiatives, and goals and how they can positively impact our communities on and off the job site.

In addition to the project-related work our interns play a role in, they also have the opportunity to participate in companywide and local events and initiatives that focus on giving back to the communities we serve. These includes events such as our Back-to-School Backpack Drive, One Tree Planted, and Feed by Starving Children, along with many others.

Why Become a SIQ Intern?

At SitelogIQ, our internship program provides interns with real-experience and expert knowledge in their field as well as the opportunity to gain life-long mentors and opportunities to positively impact the customers and communities we serve. Our interns are encouraged to share fresh perspectives, ideas, and problem-solving solutions to help us create successful outcomes.

We believe that every team member makes a positive impact on the work that we do, and that our work matters, and that begins with our internship program. Don’t just take our word for it – hear from more of our interns about what they gained from their time at SitelogIQ:

My SitelogIQ internship has helped me fully understand what I am learning and how I would be using that knowledge from my college career.

– Kyle H., Northeast Construction Management Intern

I decided to join SitelogIQ’s team this summer as a base point in my career journey, a kickstart for business ideology and understanding. I have always had a profound interest in engineering/architecture/building improvement but never truly studied any field. SitelogIQ puts forth an ideal format to create such connections and a portfolio for personal betterment, which drew me in to enlarge my knowledge and experience as a part of this team.

– Alex G., Northeast Operations Support Intern

The people I work with at SIQ inspire me to become a better team member by giving me feedback for improvement and seeing them work together has kept me motivated.

– Lauren H., Northeast Engineering Intern
