In my post, Written Chinese: Where do I start?<\/a> I mentioned that when I first came to China, the idea of a radical was just as foreign as I was and being able to use them to read had never even crossed my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember the class when my Chinese teacher said we were going to do some writing. She gave my friend and I one of those books with the grids they give to school children and I just thought: \u2018I have no idea what I\u2019m doing!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can call it defeatist, or a bad attitude, but I honestly thought that it was just too complicated for little old me. Even as we started I felt like I couldn\u2019t even hold the pen properly to make a stroke. Actually, by the end of the class, I quite enjoyed myself, but it wasn\u2019t until after a few weeks that she began to teach us about radicals. That was when I got really excited about learning to read and write Chinese. The fact that characters had a meaning, that they weren\u2019t just lots of lines that sometimes made pretty pictures was amazing! The penny dropped (from a great height), a light bulb went on after a long power cut and I realized that maybe I actually \u2019got’ it and that even I had a chance to learn to read and write Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have written several posts focused on radicals and their meanings and it seems as though a lot of you really understand the value of radicals. However, there are lots of newcomers to Written Chinese and so it seems fitting to now explain the reason why learning radicals are important in order to further your Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let\u2019s start by having a look at the following characters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f11, \u4f60, \u4eec, \u4f5c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Now let\u2019s have a look at the left side of all four characters. You can probably see that what they all have in common is this: \u4ebb<\/a>(r\u00e9n). This is a radical meaning \u2018person\u2019. The \u2018person\u2019 radical is also the standalone character \u4eba, the radical is just turned slightly on its side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does that mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means that these 4 characters \u4f11<\/a> (xi\u016b), \u4f60<\/a> (n\u01d0), \u4eec<\/a> (men) and \u4f5c<\/a> (zu\u00f2) are all related in some way to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I guess what we need to remember is that this written language has existed for thousands of years and has gone through many transitions, not all of them particularly sympathetic to the meaning of a character. The result is that sometimes, the meaning of a radical in relation to a character is a little hard to understand because it is based on a traditional meaning. However, in this case, the four characters have a direct connection to the \u4eba<\/a> (r\u00e9n) radical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f11 <\/a>(xi\u016b) is a pictographic character so it can literally be taken apart. We have \u4ebbmeaning person and \u6728<\/a> (m\u00f9) meaning tree (you can check out our blog post on \u6728\u5b57\u65c1: The Tree Radical<\/a> later for more information on that.). So what would a person be doing stood next to a tree? Having a rest of course! After hours of working in the fields, he sits down in the shade of the tree and relaxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meaning of \u4f11<\/a> (xi\u016b) is to have a rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meaning of the next three is less obvious, but because of the radical, you can tell that they must have something to do with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f60<\/a>  (n\u01d0) – You<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4eec<\/a> – (men) Plural marker for pronouns<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f5c<\/a> – (zu\u00f2) To do<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A radical usually indicates the meaning<\/strong> or pronunciation of a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s do a little test and see if you know or can guess the radical and meaning of these characters. When you think you know, move your mouse over the image to show the meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s a clue: hand, heart, water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"\"\n\n\n\n\"\"\n\n\n\n\"\"\n\n\n\n

Radicals are not only important to help us understand the meaning of the character, but it also helps when using a dictionary. Now, I know most of us are using online dictionaries<\/a> and dictionary apps, but there are still people using those things made of paper (shock!). Basically, in order to use a \u6c49\u8bed\u8bcd\u5178<\/a> (h\u00e0n y\u01d4 c\u00ed di\u01cen) or Chinese Dictionary (made of paper) you need to have a good knowledge of radicals to find a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6885\u81ba\u795a<\/a> (M\u00e9i Y\u012bng Zu\u00f2) developed the radical-and-stroke-sorting principle during the Ming Dynasty, which was published first within the \u5b57\u6c47<\/a> (z\u00ec hu\u00ec) or \u2018Lexicon\u2019. This means that characters are listed by radical and then ordered by the number of strokes needed to write them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
