Many of you already know that Written Chinese has experienced a few changes over the last few years, the most significant was saying bye to our Written Chinese Dictionary app (5555). 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, it\u2019s not the end of the world! Our Online Dictionary is still alive and kicking and an essential tool for learning Chinese! 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t used the Online Dictionary before or you\u2019re brand new to learning Chinese, here\u2019s some advice on how to use it.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, go to the Online Dictionary<\/a>. Why not save it to your bookmarks for easy access later?

SEARCHING THE WRITTEN CHINESE ONLINE DICTIONARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the nice things about the Online Dictionary is that you can search in English, Chinese characters and even Pinyin! 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you use Pinyin and English you\u2019ll probably get lots of search results to choose from. For example, if you search for \u2018bei\u2019<\/a>, you\u2019ll get 11 Commonly Found Characters. Searching using Chinese will get fewer results.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to search using Chinese characters, first you\u2019ll need to install a Chinese keyboard<\/a>.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can search using Chinese, even if you\u2019re quite new to Chinese characters. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you\u2019re looking for the character \u5317 as in \u5317\u4eac, you may already know that the pinyin is \u2018bei\u2019 (b\u011bi).

Once you\u2019ve switched to the Chinese Pinyin keyboard (mac: ctrl + space \/ windows: alt + shift), simply type \u2018bei\u2019 into the search box. You\u2019ll see the most commonly used characters that have \u2018bei\u2019 as their pinyin. Select the character you\u2019re looking for, either with your mouse or by pressing the corresponding number on your keyboard)

SOME TIPS WHEN SEARCHING THE WRITTEN CHINESE ONLINE DICTIONARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

– When searching in English, use American English or usage<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Search for single English words and not sentences<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Click \u2018Learn More\u2019 on a character or characters you\u2019re interested in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– When searching using Pinyin for a word containing a marker such as \u01da (n\u01da), use the letter \u2018v\u2019 in place of the \u2018u\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘LEARN MORE’ IN THE ONLINE DICTIONARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019ve got your results, you\u2019ll see some basic information about the characters or Chinese words (we call them bigrams). This may be enough depending on the reason for your search, but clicking the \u2018Learn More\u2019 button next to the character, will take you to the \u2018details page\u2019.

Every character and Chinese word (bigram) details page includes:
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Stroke animations that you can stop and replay<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Audio<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Radical breakdown (what\u2019s a radical? [link to relevant article])<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Common Chinese words<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Example sentences with clickable characters<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you prefer not to see the coloured pinyin, you can change your settings where it says \u2018tone\u2019

OTHER FEATURES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re writing and want to include pinyin, or even want to search the dictionary using pinyin, you can use the Pinyin Editor tool.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tool gives you access to all the different tone markers, including the more unusual ones, \u01da \u01d6 \u01d8 and \u01dc.

If you scroll right to the bottom of the Online Dictionary, you\u2019ll find a list of links to Chinese characters by stroke number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
