In Chinese, some words don’t mean anything on their own yet express certain emotions, such as exclamation, calling for attention, or responding. These words include \u5509 (ai), \u554a (a), \u54fc (heng), \u54e6 (o), and \u54ce (ai).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such words are called interjections. These words simulate people’s emotional voice. Despite not having any specific meaning, they’re a natural part of the Chinese language. It’s a unique character that can convey the different emotions of the speaker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we are mainly looking at the interjection, ‘\u54ce<\/a>‘ (\u0101i).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interjection ‘\u54ce’ (\u0101i)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As you might already know, Chinese characters are made up of pictograms<\/a>. “\u54ce” is an interesting Chinese character with a left-right structure, composed of \u53e3<\/a> (k\u01d2u) and \u827e<\/a> (\u00e0i).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53e3 (k\u01d2u) means ‘mouth,’ which means that the character has something to do with the mouth. The right-hand side of \u54ce (\u0101i) shows how the Chinese character is pronounced. \u827e, found on the right side, has the sound (\u00e0i), which is then adjusted to (ai) for the interjection, \u54ce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
