What are Chinese Interjections\uff1f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may have heard Chinese people talking on the phone. Interjections are often used during a call, with different tones of voice to imply different meanings. Interjections play a vital role in Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually, an interjection is a word that expresses an exclamation, call someone, or indicate a response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we’ll introduce the most commonly used word: \u55ef (en).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interjection \u55ef (en)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u55ef (en) is a pictophonetic character composed of a radical that suggests meaning and a sound element. On the left side of \u55ef (en) is the Chinese radical \u53e3 (k\u01d2u), which means mouth. In most cases, words with the \u53e3 radical are related to the mouth, such as a sound. As an interjection word, \u55ef also follows this rule. On the right side of \u55ef is the Chinese character \u6069 (\u0113n), whose pronunciation is the same as \u55ef. Therefore, you can remember this Chinese character easily, whether from its pronunciation or its shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is the Interjection \u55ef used?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each interjection expresses a certain feeling or imitates a certain sound, so it shouldn’t be used indiscriminately. So, how do we use \u55ef? Although \u55ef has different meanings in different situations, the difference in tones can also help us distinguish its meaning. There are three different tones and meanings of \u55ef: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. \u55ef (\u00e8n), indicating a response or reaching an agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The tone of \u55ef is not as strong as “of course,” but it is more commonly used in daily life. Responding to others with “en” is effective feedback because it means you understand and agree with what they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The third type of \u55ef (\u011bng) is rarely used<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u55ef with the third tone (\u011bng) to show surprise or something unexpected exists in textbooks but is no longer used in real life. Chinese people don’t really use this \u55ef; instead, we use the second tone: \u55ef (\u00e9n).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
