What are Chinese Interjections\uff1f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most often, face-to-face or verbal communication is more effective than written expressions. This is because our facial expressions and changes in tone add to the meaning we want to reveal.
For example, although most interjections have only one character, they convey different meanings when expressed differently. Usually, an interjection is expressing an exclamation, calling someone, or indicating a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today I’ll introduce one of them: \u54e6 (o).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interjection \u54e6<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u54e6 (o) is a pictophonetic character composed of a meaning element \u53e3<\/a> (k\u01d2u) and a sound element \u6211<\/a> (w\u01d2). The Chinese character \u53e3 means mouth, and in most cases, words with the \u53e3 radical relate to something to do with the mouth, such as sound and eating. On the right side, the Chinese character \u6211 (w\u01d2) shares the same final “o” sound with \u54e6. Therefore, this is a Chinese character that you can easily remember from its pronunciation or its shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is the interjection \u54e6 used?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The change of meaning with a tone change is a fascinating part of a language, but it also requires extra attention. Each interjection expresses a certain feeling, so we should be careful how we use them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how do we use \u54e6\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two different tones and meanings of \u54e6: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. \u54e6 (\u00f3), indicating curiosity or doubt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Similar to \u55ef (\u00e9n)<\/a>, \u54e6 (\u00f3) can also indicate questioning. But \u54e6<\/a> (\u00f3) expresses doubt about the authenticity of a thing. It’s pretty similar to asking “really?” in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
