A basic introduction to \u5440 (ya)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chinese words are divided into many categories and can have several different usages at the same time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5440<\/a> (ya), which we are going to cover here, can be an interjection, like \u554a<\/a> (a), \u5582<\/a> (wei), \u8bf6<\/a> (ei). Such interjections can express emotions such as exclamation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words can also be onomatopoeic; these are words that mimic a sound. For example, in English, you say ‘tik-tok’ to describe the sound of a clock. In Chinese, \u54a3<\/a> (gu\u0101ng) \u54d7\u5566\u5566<\/a> (hu\u0101 l\u0101 l\u0101) and other words can simulate a sound, can make the language more specific, and create vivid imagery. \u5440 (ya) can also be used like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some characters are modal particles, such as \u554a (a). \u5440 (ya) also falls into this category when influenced by the phonemes ‘a, o, e, i, and \u00fc’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53e3 (k\u01d2u) means ‘mouth,’ which indicates that the sound relates to the mouth and is the ideographic part of \u5440 (ya). The right side of \u5440 (ya) reveals how the character should be pronounced based on \u7259 (y\u00e1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
