While I haven\u2019t checked out the other language versions, they all seem to follow a similar concept.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a world where we mostly text instead of calling, the idea of texting to learn seems, well, obvious. Throw in the ridiculously cute interface and \u2018Lanny,\u2019 your AI teacher, it\u2019s a pretty fun way to learn, especially if you\u2019re an absolute beginner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is really only an app for beginners or if you want to review the basics. Honestly, I\u2019m so disappointed that there aren\u2019t any levels for more advanced learners. Having said that, if you\u2019re new to Chinese, I think this app could easily keep you occupied for a while. You can cover Survival phrases, Greetings, Self-Introduction, and more. There\u2019s even a section on Business Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12597\" width=\"628\" data-init-width=\"850\" height=\"369\" data-init-height=\"500\" title=\"eggbun app review ios screenshots\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eggbun-app-review-ios-screenshots.png?resize=628%2C369\" data-width=\"628\" data-height=\"369\" style=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There\u2019s a login and dashboard that tracks your studies and module completion. It looks like there\u2019s also a web dashboard, but I had problems trying to log in, so I\u2019m not sure if it&#8217;s available now.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">So, as I\u2019ve mentioned, it\u2019s pretty basic. You choose a module, jump into a chat with Lanny, and off you go. You can go through various stages of learning and testing, and if you upgrade, you\u2019ll get access to extra games and tests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When you respond in the chat session, you can do so using \u2018English,\u2019 (Pinyin without tones) Pinyin, or Chinese characters. The one flaw with using Pinyin is that some tones aren\u2019t available on your keyboard. For example, if you want to type o3\/\u01d2, there\u2019s no option for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12599\" width=\"628\" data-init-width=\"850\" height=\"369\" data-init-height=\"500\" title=\"eggbun app review screenshots 3\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eggbun-app-review-screenshots-3.png?resize=628%2C369\" data-width=\"628\" data-height=\"369\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This same problem exists within the \u2018Typing Racer\u2019 game, so if any word appears using the pinyin \u2018 \u01d2 \u2018, it\u2019s pretty much game over.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some of the other features were nice additions, including the word list, a space to save words you want to keep learning, and Culture Notes, which are basically mini blog posts embedded into the app.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12598\" width=\"628\" data-init-width=\"850\" height=\"369\" data-init-height=\"500\" title=\"eggbun app review screenshots 2\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eggbun-app-review-screenshots-2.png?resize=628%2C369\" data-width=\"628\" data-height=\"369\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you\u2019re as enamored with the style as me and you\u2019re a beginner, then I would subscribe for a month or two. I think much more than a few months and you\u2019ll have passed the point where this app has content for you.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Verdict<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you like cute, novel ways to learn a language, check it out. I suspect the target audience for this app may be the younger market (I\u2019m young at heart), so if you\u2019ve got some young budding language learners, they might appreciate this app.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12600\" width=\"628\" data-init-width=\"850\" height=\"369\" data-init-height=\"500\" title=\"eggbun app review screenshots 4\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eggbun-app-review-screenshots-4.png?resize=628%2C369\" data-width=\"628\" data-height=\"369\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There was part of me that wished Lanny had a bit more attitude instead of being so nice, just to keep me interested a little longer. Part of the chat novelty wears thin when Lanny runs out of things to say.
