{"id":1796,"date":"2014-11-21T11:58:56","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T03:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/?p=1796"},"modified":"2022-08-30T16:16:53","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T08:16:53","slug":"chinese-character-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/chinese-character-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Character Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To better understand Chinese characters, we can trace them back to&nbsp;their source in <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/xiaozhuan\/27562\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5c0f\u7bc6<\/a> (Xi\u01ceozhu\u00e0n) calligraphy. \u5c0f\u7bc6 (Xi\u01ceozhu\u00e0n) means &#8216;small&nbsp;seal&#8217; and is a form of Chinese writing that dates from the Qin Dynasty&nbsp;(221B.C.-206B.C.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A7%A6%E5%A7%8B%E7%9A%87&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u79e6\u59cb\u7687<\/a> (q\u00edn sh\u01d0 hu\u00e1ng) was the founder of the Qin Dynasty. He unified&nbsp;the Seven Warring States and created the first Chinese empire. His&nbsp;minister <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/lisi\/44415\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u674e\u65af<\/a> (l\u01d0 s\u012b) combined the text of the seven states to develop a&nbsp;common language, which is Xi\u01ceozhu\u00e0n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Xi\u01ceozhu\u00e0n characters often look more like pictures of the&nbsp;things that they represent, it can be useful and fun to see how modern&nbsp;characters evolved from them. The Xi\u01ceozhu\u00e0n version looks like the posture of a woman on her knees. In earlier times, the social status of Chinese women was low, and they were required to kneel down to their parents, brothers, husbands, and their husband&#8217;s parents. So this kneeling down posture became associated with women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u4eba (r\u00e9n) &#8216;human being&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"137\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?resize=900%2C137&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?w=956&amp;ssl=1 956w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?resize=510%2C78&amp;ssl=1 510w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?resize=100%2C15&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?resize=300%2C46&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/\u4eba-character-development.jpg?resize=768%2C117&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This character is <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/ren\/54\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4eba<\/a> (r\u00e9n). In ancient times, only slaves were called r\u00e9n, while upper class people were called <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/jun\/6176\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u541b <\/a>(j\u016bn) \uff0c<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/chen\/5777\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u81e3<\/a> (ch\u00e9n) , or <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/daifu\/1679\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5927\u592b<\/a> (d\u00e0i f\u016b). So the r\u00e9n character was a man on his knees with hands touching the ground. But now r\u00e9n is \u4eba, which is a person standing up. He looks like an old Western gunfighter ready to draw and shoot. It refers to the things that are above human beings.
