You may see or hear a lot of phrases including the character \u201c\u9a6c\u201d (m\u01ce=horse) because the coming year will be the Year of the Horse.\u00a0 \u201c\u9a6c\u4e0a(m\u01ce\u00a0sh\u00e0ng)\u201d means \u201cimmediately\u201d, so phrases such as \u201c\u9a6c\u4e0a\u6709\u94b1\uff08m\u01cesh\u00e0ng y\u01d2u qi\u00e1n = get money immediately\uff09, \u201c\u9a6c\u4e0a\u6709\u5bf9\u8c61\u201d (m\u01cesh\u00e0ng y\u01d2u du\u00ecxi\u00e0ng = find a mate immediately)\u201d, and \u201c\u9a6c\u4e0a\u884c\u5927\u8fd0\uff08m\u01cesh\u00e0ng x\u00edng d\u00e0 y\u00f9n = have good luck immediately)\u201d are often heard. Depending on where you come from in China, there are different customs and habits for Chinese New Year&#8217;s Eve (<a title=\"spring festival eve\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E9%99%A4%E5%A4%95&amp;svt=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u9664\u5915<\/a>, ch\u00fa\u00a0x\u012b). I would like to introduce what a Guangdong native like me will do on the final day of the Chinese lunar calendar.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, my family and I will have a really nice breakfast at a restaurant. To a Guangdong native, there is nothing better than dim sum (<a title=\"spring festival eve dimsum\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%82%B9%E5%BF%83&amp;svt=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u70b9\u5fc3<\/a>, di\u01cen\u00a0xin)! We share stories from the previous year and expectations for the coming year in a relaxing and joyful atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, it\u2019s time to change the old \u201ccouplets\u201d. Couplets are the red banners that are posted above, on the sides, and in the middle of a family\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/couplets.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-233 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/couplets.jpg?resize=480%2C320\" alt=\"couplets Chinese new year\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/couplets.jpg?w=480&amp;ssl=1 480w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/couplets.jpg?resize=100%2C67&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/couplets.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To read the couplets, start from the right side, then the left, then read the top. For example, this image should be read \u201c\u65e5\u65e5\u5e73\u5b89\u798f\u6ee1\u95e8\uff0c\u5e74\u5e74\u5bcc\u8d35\u4eba\u5174\u65fa\uff0c\u5fc3\u60f3\u4e8b\u6210 (r\u00ec r\u00ec ping\u0101n f\u00fa m\u01cenm\u00e9n, ni\u00e1n ni\u00e1n f\u00f9gu\u00ec r\u00e9n x\u012bngw\u00e0ng, x\u012bn xi\u01ceng sh\u00ec ch\u00e9ng)\u201d which means \u201cBe safe every day and full of happiness. Be prosperous every year and full of luck. Dreams will come true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, we will shower with pomelo leaves (\u67da\u5b50, y\u00f2uzi) because it is said that the leaves can clear the bad luck and drive evil away from people. It\u2019s funny to see leaves near the shampoo in the bathroom, but I love this tradition and the leaves smell really good! After the \u201cevil\u201d is scared away, we will put on new clothes and new shoes, meaning everything will be new for the New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner is the most important activity on Chinese New Year&#8217;s Eve. We call it \u201c<a title=\"spring festival eve\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%9B%A2%E5%B9%B4%E9%A5%AD&amp;svt=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u56e2\u5e74\u996d<\/a>\u201d (tu\u00e1n ni\u00e1nf\u00e0n = family reunion dinner\uff09 or \u201c<a title=\"Spring Festival Eve\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%B9%B4%E5%A4%9C%E9%A5%AD&amp;svt=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u5e74\u591c\u996d<\/a>\u201d\uff08ni\u00e1n y\u00e8f\u00e0n = New\u00a0Year&#8217;s\u00a0Eve\u00a0dinner\uff09. We will prepare the best dinner of the whole year and all of the family members will sit together and enjoy it. This is the happiest part of Chinese New Year&#8217;s Eve. In recent years, more and more families choose to have the dinner in a restaurant because more people can be together and you don\u2019t need to be bothered preparing the dinner.
