The horizontal lines look like fingers. There\u2019s actually an old saying that goes \u201c\u5341\u6839\u624b\u6307\u5404\u6709\u957f\u77ed\u201d which means \u201cOf the 10 fingers, some are long and some are short.\u201d<br \/>\nN: What does that mean?<br \/>\nA: The deeper meaning is that different people have different advantages and disadvantages.<br \/>\nN: OK, I get it…<\/p>\n<p>A: Actually, every finger has it\u2019s own special Chinese name.<br \/>\nN: It\u2019s the same in English\u2026<br \/>\nA: What do you mean\u2026?<br \/>\nN: Tommy Thumb, Peter Pointer\u2026.<br \/>\nA: Not exactly the same\u2026<\/p>\n<p>N: So \u624b is a good character to recognize in China for those inconvenient moments when you need to visit the \u6d17\u624b\u95f4 (x\u01d0 sh\u01d2u ji\u0101n).<br \/>\nA: Yeah, we\u2019re glad we didn\u2019t get any toilet videos last week<br \/>\nN: Can you teach us some useful examples of how to use the \u624b character, Allen?<br \/>\nA: Sure, Chinese children always say: “\u624b\u7275\u624b\u505a\u4e2a\u597d\u670b\u53cb\u3002” which means \u201chand in hand, be a good friend.\u201d<br \/>\nN: So most words associated with the hand feature the \u624b character\uff0c right?<br \/>\nA: Yep, for example \u624b\u81c2 (sh\u01d2u b\u00ec) means arm and \u624b\u8868 (sh\u01d2u bi\u01ceo) means watch.<br \/>\nN: Speaking of my watch, I think its time to watch those \u624b videos from you guys.<\/p>\n<p>A: Well done everyone<br \/>\nN: Looks like people have been practicing their writing skills!<br \/>\nA: So, let’s look at next week\u2019s character.<br \/>\nN: Yeah, this week\u2019s character is \u82b1 (hu\u0101).<br \/>\nA: \u82b1 means flower, so we expect some artistic pictures for this one!<br \/>\nN: Allen, can you show us to write the character \u82b1 please?<br \/>\nA: Yeah sure, lets go to the board\u2026<\/p>\n<p>[Allen demos \u82b1 character]<br \/>\nA: \u82b1 has two parts; the first part is the radical at the top \u8349\u5b57\u5934 (c\u01ceo z\u00ec t\u00f3u) which is used with many plant characters. The second part is \u5316 (hu\u00e0) at the bottom which is the phonetic part for this character. \u5316\u5b66 (hu\u00e0 xu\u00e9) in Chinese means chemistry. So next time you know what you need to give to your girlfriend for Valentine\u2019s day: it\u2019s a plant and chemistry!
