The players would often jump for the whole afternoon, laughing and singing. The game became more difficult if the rubber band was placed higher and higher. Every time I watched the girls play this game I wanted to join them (if no guys were watching, haha).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%A9%A1%E7%9A%AE%E6%89%8B&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6a61\u76ae\u624b<\/a><\/b> (xi\u00e0ng&nbsp;p\u00ed sh\u01d2u = rubber hand)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Rubber-hand1.jpg?resize=250%2C211&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rubber hand\" class=\"wp-image-318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Rubber-hand1.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Rubber-hand1.jpg?resize=100%2C84&amp;ssl=1 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The second toy I will tell you about was also made of rubber, called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%A9%A1%E7%9A%AE%E6%89%8B&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6a61\u76ae\u624b<\/a> (xi\u00e0ng&nbsp;p\u00ed sh\u01d2u),\u201d literally \u201crubber hand.\u201d This was a good \u201cweapon\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%AD%A6%E5%99%A8&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6b66\u5668<\/a> (w\u01d4 q\u00ec) for boys&nbsp;to fight against each other. You would hold the thin side and propel the \u201cpalm\u201d onto somebody\u2019s face or body. It was elastic \u677e\u7d27\u5e26 (s\u014dng j\u01d0n d\u00e0i)&nbsp;and soft, so it was not very painful once you got hit. If you played with it for a while, however, the hand would become gross from dust, sand, and hair that attached to it. But whatever, most kids are not afraid of dirt <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%8D%E6%80%95%E7%81%B0%E5%B0%98&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e0d\u6015\u7070\u5c18<\/a> (b\u00f9 p\u00e0 hu\u012b ch\u00e9n), so keep attacking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%8E%BB%E7%92%83%E7%90%83&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u73bb\u7483\u7403<\/a><\/b> (b\u014d&nbsp;li qi\u00fa = marbles)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The third toy was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%8E%BB%E7%92%83%E7%90%83&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u73bb\u7483\u7403<\/a> (b\u014d&nbsp;li qi\u00fa = marbles)\u201d or \u201c<a title=\"wavy bead toy dictionary\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%B3%A2%E7%8F%A0&amp;svt=null\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6ce2\u73e0<\/a> (b\u014d zh\u016b = wavy bead). Marbles were very popular <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=popular&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6d41\u884c<\/a> (li\u00fa x\u00edng) among children because they were bright, crystalline, and easy to swallow (I\u2019m joking, don\u2019t do that). We played different games using marbles. In one game, we would dig a hole in the sand and then take turns trying to hit each other\u2019s marbles into the hole until only one marble remained. The owner of this marble would be the winner <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=yingjia&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u8d62\u5bb6<\/a> (y\u00edng ji\u0101).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/marble-games.jpg?resize=600%2C339\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/marble-games.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/marble-games.jpg?resize=510%2C288&amp;ssl=1 510w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/marble-games.jpg?resize=100%2C57&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/marble-games.jpg?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a different game, we would put some marbles&nbsp;into a pot. Each player would have their own pair of chopsticks \u7b77\u5b50 (ku\u00e0i zi) and a bowl. Each player would use the chopsticks to take marbles from the pot and put them into his or her own bowl.&nbsp; At the end of the game, whoever had the most marbles was the winner. When there were only a few marbles left, it was hilarious to watch the chopsticks fighting each other in the pot while the already-picked marbles rested comfortably in their bowls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A7%AF%E6%9C%A8&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u79ef\u6728<\/a><\/b> (j\u012b&nbsp;m\u00f9 = toy blocks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next toy we called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A7%AF%E6%9C%A8&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u79ef\u6728<\/a> (j\u012b&nbsp;m\u00f9),\u201d or toy blocks. Children could build whatever they wanted with the blocks. In this picture you can see one kind of block that had simple Chinese characters on one side and a puzzle <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%8B%BC%E5%9B%BE&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u62fc\u56fe<\/a> (p\u012bn t\u00fa) on the other side. It was called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%BA%A2%E7%99%BD%E6%9C%BA&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7ea2\u767d\u673a<\/a> (h\u00f3ng b\u00e1i j\u012b = literally \u201cred and white machine\u201d)\u201din Chinese because its main colors were red and white. In English it was called \u201c<a title=\"Family Computer toy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_Computer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Computer<\/a> (FC),\u201d and it was the original gaming system introduced by Nintendo <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%BB%BB%E5%A4%A9%E5%A0%82&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7136\u5929\u5802<\/a> (r\u00e8n ti\u0101n t\u00e1ng) in 1983. To a boy at that time, owning a FC felt like you owned the world. You could not only play the game yourself, but you could also show it off to all of your friends. Your friends would treat you to many snacks and drinks in order to play your FC. I was one of the lucky boys who owned this toy.
