The first thing I asked when I arrived in China over 4 years ago was how to say \u2018hello\u2019 and \u2018thank you\u2019. I insisted on saying \u2018\u8c22\u8c22\u2019 for everything and got upset when people didn\u2019t say it back to me when I held a door or did some other trivial deed. I tried to ask several people how to say \u2018please\u2019 and although I was taught \u8bf7 (q\u01d0ng), I never heard it used by the local people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please, and thank-yous were drilled into me from a young age and it was really hard for me to accept that in China, it\u2019s just not necessary to say them that often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a taxi driver once who told me that since I was the one giving him the money why was I the one saying thank you? I did see his logic, but I still said thank you to him and gave him a few English lessons.
I even have a Chinese friend who told me that since we were friends, I really didn\u2019t have to say thank you for things. I still say thank you to my close friends for all kinds of things, but it does make you wonder if it\u2019s overkill…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, over the next 4 years of being in China, I did begin to learn some things about politeness and etiquette in China<\/a> (I\u2019m still learning, honestly), and it may be different from what I\u2019m used to, but it\u2019s just as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are 10 Polite Expressions in Chinese that you can use in different situations. To read more about the characters used and to see the pinyin, click on the red-linked character sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. \u9ebb\u70e6\u4f60<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u9ebb\u70e6\u4f60<\/a> (m\u00e1 fan n\u01d0) sorry to trouble you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9ebb\u70e6\u4f60\u00a0(m\u00e1 fan n\u01d0) is often used as \u2018sorry to trouble you..\u2019 before asking a question or for someone\u2019s help. The literal translation of \u9ebb\u70e6(m\u00e1 fan) is ‘troublesome’ or ‘annoying’ and using this kind of phrase shows respect to the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using \u9ebb\u70e6\u4f60 (m\u00e1 fan n\u01d0), \u6211 or \u2018I\u2019 does not need to be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9ebb\u70e6\u4f60 (m\u00e1 fan n\u01d0) also be replaced with \u52b3\u9a7e<\/a> (l\u00e1o ji\u00e0) meaning \u2018excuse me\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u4e0d\u597d\u610f\u601d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0d\u597d\u610f\u601d<\/a> (b\u00f9 h\u01ceo y\u00ec si) = to feel embarrassed \/ to find it embarrassing \/ to be sorry (for inconveniencing somebody)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0d\u597d\u610f\u601d can sometimes be used to apologize for doing something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a pretty good general word for \u2018sorry\u2019. For example, if you were to stand on someone’s foot or knock into them accidentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now seems a good time to mention \u4e00\u4e0b<\/a> (y\u012b xi\u00e0) which is used when you wish someone to take a little time to do something. It\u2019s a more casual and a gentler way to suggest something to someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e00\u4e0b is used after a verb. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea that saying thank you is really not necessary is really emphasized with this phrase, especially when you consider the western reply, \u2018you\u2019re welcome\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u54ea\u91cc\u54ea\u91cc\uff01<\/a> (n\u01ce l\u01d0 n\u01ce l\u01d0) you’re too kind \/ you flatter me<\/strong>

A respected and polite quality that a Chinese person should have is modesty. You never accept flattery willingly (by saying \u8c22\u8c22), but by using \u54ea\u91cc\u54ea\u91cc (n\u01ce l\u01d0 n\u01ce l\u01d0) which means \u2018where? where?\u2019 In other words \u201cWhere is the person with these qualities, as it cannot possibly be me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigram \u5173\u7cfb (gu\u0101n xi)\u00a0<\/strong>is probably best known for its meaning as \u2018relationship\u2019, but in this case, it means ‘concern’ or ‘affect’. \u6ca1\u5173\u7cfb\u00a0(m\u00e9i gu\u0101n xi)\u00a0translates to something like \u2018there\u2019s no concern\u2019 or \u2018there\u2019s no effect\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. \u4e0d\u5ba2\u6c14<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0d\u5ba2\u6c14<\/a> (b\u00fa k\u00e8 qi) You\u2019re welcome \/ Don\u2019t mention it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5ba2\u6c14 (k\u00e8 qi) <\/strong>actually means polite, so although this is often used as an equivalent to \u2018you\u2019re welcome\u2019, its actually more like \u2018dont be so polite\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
