As a foreigner living in China, it is sometimes nice to see familiar brands when you are feeling homesick.  Some of these brands have become integral to the lives of Chinese people, some of them are new.  Below I have listed some of the most commonly seen Western brands in China and how they are written<\/span> in Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9ea6\u5f53\u52b3<\/a> (m\u00e0i d\u0101ng l\u00e1o)<\/span> = McDonald\u2019s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

McDonald’s has the phonetic name, \u9ea6\u5f53\u52b3<\/a> (m\u00e0i d\u0101ng l\u00e1o). However, in an attempt to increase sales the McDonald’s comany name was changed to \u91d1\u62f1\u95e8 (j\u012bn g\u01d2ng m\u00e9n) meaning the ‘Golden Arches’. It seems like you can find people everywhere who like McDonald\u2019s and this is also true in China.  The menu is contextualized, with more chicken sandwiches than beef ones and local specialties like milk tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u91d1 (j\u012bn)<\/span> = gold<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u62f1 (g\u01d2ng)<\/span> = arch<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u95e8 (m\u00e9n)<\/span> = door<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6c83\u5c14\u739b<\/a> (w\u00f2 \u011br m\u01ce)<\/span> = Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stepping into a Wal-Mart can be a refreshing experience after spending a lot of time in other Chinese retail stores. Any previous qualms I had about shopping at Wal-Mart have been crushed by the fact that they are often the only store where I can find what I actually want. \u6c83\u5c14\u739b is also a phonetic name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6c83(w\u00f2)<\/span> = fertile \/ rich<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5c14 (\u011br)<\/span> = thus \/ so \/ like that \/ you \/ thou<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u739b(m\u01ce)<\/span> = agate \/ cornelian<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u661f\u5df4\u514b<\/a> (x\u012bng b\u0101 k\u00e8)<\/span> = Starbucks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While China is not traditionally a coffee-drinking country, young Chinese urbanites have grown an interest in cafes like Starbucks.  The drinks are roughly the same price as in the States, which makes them very expensive by Chinese standards. Starbucks is somewhat contextualized with its Starbucks moon cakes and localized mugs.  \u661f\u5df4\u514b is also a phonetic spelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u661f (x\u012bng)<\/span> = star \/ satellite<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5df4 (b\u0101)<\/span> = to long for \/ to wish \/ to cling to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u514b (k\u00e8)<\/span> = to be able to \/ to subdue<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Chinese people love KFC. While it seems to be dwindling in other places around the world, the chain is practically everywhere here.  Like McDonald\u2019s, KFC also has a phonetic spelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u80af(k\u011bn)<\/span> = to agree \/ to consent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fb7(d\u00e9)<\/span> = virtue \/ goodness \/ morality<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u57fa(j\u012b)<\/span> = base \/ foundation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H&M<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

H&M has no Chinese name, probably because \u201cH\u201d and \u201cM\u201d are easy to read. It is fairly affordable compared to other clothing in China.  It is especially good for Western women who struggle to find their size in Chinese shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5bb6\u4e50\u798f<\/a> (ji\u0101 l\u00e8 f\u00fa)<\/span> = Carrefour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This French grocery store chain, like Wal-Mart, is very well organized and they also sell a good number of imported products, like alcohol and cake mix.  The name is also phonetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5bb6 (ji\u0101 )<\/span> = home \/ family<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e50 (l\u00e8)<\/span> = happy \/ laugh<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u798f (f\u00fa)<\/span> = good fortune \/ happiness \/ luck<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6c49\u5821\u738b<\/a> (h\u00e0n b\u01ceo w\u00e1ng )<\/span> = Burger King<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Burger King in China, unlike McDonald\u2019s, still sells more beef sandwiches than chicken sandwiches.  \u6c49\u5821\u738b is partly phonetic, partly not.  \u6c49\u5821 (h\u00e0n b\u01ceo) is phonetic for \u201chamburger\u201d and \u738b (w\u00e1ng) means \u201cking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u82f9\u679c\u516c\u53f8<\/a> (p\u00edng gu\u01d2 g\u014dng s\u012b)<\/span> = Apple Inc.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chinese people go crazy for Apple products.  These are relatively expensive, but more and more Chinese people are able to afford them.  \u82f9\u679c (p\u00edng gu\u01d2) is not phonetic, but merely means \u201capple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fc5\u80dc\u5ba2<\/a> (b\u00ec sh\u00e8ng k\u00e8)<\/span> = Pizza Hut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many Americans who visit Pizza Hut in China are surprised when they discover that the menu is quite different than Pizza Hut in the States.  The pizza is far less greasy and the restaurant also serves pastas, appetizers, and more.  I have seen long lines of Chinese people waiting for a table at Pizza Hut. \u5fc5\u80dc\u5ba2 is also phonetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fc5 (b\u00ec )<\/span> = certainly \/ must<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u80dc (sh\u00e8ng)<\/span> = victory \/ success<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5ba2 (k\u00e8)<\/span> = customer \/ visitor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53ef\u53e3\u53ef\u4e50<\/a> (k\u011b k\u01d2u k\u011b l\u00e8) = Coca-Cola<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coke is available EVERYWHERE in China, although the taste is a little different from in the West, it’s popular with Chinese people and foreigners alike.
The Chinese is an amusing phonetic take on the Coca-Cola brand and easy characters to remember if you’re in a need of a carbonated beverage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53ef (k\u011b) = can \/ may<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53e3 (k\u01d2u) – mouth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53ef (k\u011b) = can \/ may<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e86 (l\u00e8) – happy \/ cheerful<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addition: \u53ef\u53e3<\/a> (k\u011b k\u01d2u) also means delicious and \u53ef\u4e50<\/a> (k\u011b l\u00e8) means pleasant or entertaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7f8e\u5b9d\u83b2<\/a> (m\u011bi b\u01ceo li\u00e1n) = Maybelline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maybelline has become a popular brand of makeup in China, especially it’s mascaras and nail polish.
The Chinese is a phonetic translation, but each character has an apt meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7f8e (m\u011bi) = the Americas \/ beautiful<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5b9d (b\u01ceo) – jewel \/ gem \/ treasure \/ precious<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fde (li\u00e1n) – lotus<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5170\u853b<\/a> (l\u00e1n k\u00f2u) = Lanc\u00f4me<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This French cosmetic brand is sought after in China. One thing that Chinese women are prepared to pay for are cosmetics and beauty products. The characters are purely a phonetic translation of the Lanc\u00f4me brand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5170 (l\u00e1n) = orchid \/ lily magnolia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u853b (k\u00f2u) = related to ‘nutmeg’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5496\u4e16\u5bb6\u5496\u5561<\/a> (k\u0101 sh\u00ec ji\u0101 k\u0101 f\u0113i) = Costa Coffee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

British coffee chain Costa Coffee is popping up around China and is becoming a popular alternative to \u661f\u5df4\u514b. The Chinese name is a mixture of phonetic and brand translation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5496 (k\u0101) = coffee \/ class \/ grade<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e16\u5bb6 (sh\u00ec ji\u0101) = family influential for generations \/ aristocratic family<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5496\u5561 (k\u0101 f\u0113i) = coffee (loanword)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6b27\u8212\u4e39<\/a>(\u014du sh\u016b d\u0101n) = L\u2019occitane<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in 2015, the world-famous French skincare brand planned to open 9 new stores in China and are quickly becoming more and more well known, even creating their own Tmall.com \u5929\u732b <\/a>store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
