This is our second article that looks at Chinese sentence particles. We will discuss structural, aspect and some other particles that do not fit into a specific category. Structural particles \u7ed3\u6784\u52a9\u8bcd (ji\u00e9 g\u00f2u zh\u00f9 c\u00ed): \u7684, \u5730, \u5f97 and \u6240<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Structural particles are characters that are used to show a grammatical relationship between other words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first three structural particles, \u7684 (de), \u5730 (de) and \u5f97 (de) are all the 5th tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7684 (de) is often used between the attributive and center word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In both these examples, \u7684 (de) can be explained as being \u2018of the\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f1f\u5927\u7684\u4f5c\u5bb6<\/a> (w\u011bi d\u00e0 de zu\u00f2 ji\u0101) great writer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8ba8\u8bba\u7684\u7ed3\u679c<\/a> (t\u01ceo l\u00f9n de ji\u00e9 gu\u01d2) the outcome of the discussion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7684 is often used after another word or phrase to make a noun phrase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They can be used as a subject, predicate (containing a verb) or an object:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a subject \u4f5c\u4e3b\u8bed<\/a> (zu\u00f2 zh\u01d4 y\u01d4):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5403\u7684\u548c\u7a7f\u7684\u90fd\u5728\u90a3\u513f\u3002<\/a> (ch\u012b de h\u00e9 chu\u0101n de d\u014du z\u00e0i nar) = Things for both eating and wearing are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a predicate (containing a verb) \u4f5c\u8c13\u8bed<\/a> (zu\u00f2 w\u00e8i y\u01d4):
\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u6211\u4e70\u7684\u3002<\/a> (zh\u00e8 b\u011bn sh\u016b w\u01d2 m\u01cei de) I bought the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an object \u4f5c\u5bbe\u8bed<\/a> (zu\u00f2 b\u012bn y\u01d4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f60\u7684\u624b\u673a\u8be5\u6362\u65b0\u7684\u4e86\u3002<\/a> (n\u01d0 de sh\u01d2u j\u012b g\u0101i hu\u00e0n x\u012bn de le) Your mobile phone needs to be replaced with a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5730 (de) is often used between adverbs and center words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u6162\u6162\u5730\u8d70<\/a> (m\u00e0n m\u00e0n de z\u01d2u) = Walk slowly
\u6e10\u6e10\u5730\u6697\u4e0b\u53bb<\/a> (ji\u00e0n ji\u00e0n de \u00e0n xi\u00e0 qu) = Dim gradually<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5f97 is used after the verb and adjective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When the \u5f97 is used after a verb, the particle is a complement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8bb0\u5f97\u5f88\u6e05\u695a<\/a> (j\u00ec de h\u011bn q\u012bng chu) Remember very clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8d70\u5f97\u5f88\u5feb<\/a> (z\u01d2u de h\u011bn ku\u00e0i) Walk very fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240 (su\u01d2) is used before a transitive verb<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When using the character \u6240 with a verb, it becomes a noun phrase, but is only used in written Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240\u89c1\u6240\u95fb<\/a> (su\u01d2 ji\u00e0n su\u01d2 w\u00e9n) = What one sees and hears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240\u4f5c\u6240\u4e3a<\/a> (su\u01d2 zu\u00f2 su\u01d2 w\u00e9i) = One’s conduct and deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The noun phrase of \u6240 (su\u01d2) can also work with the particle \u7684 (de)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u6240\u77e5\u9053\u7684\u60c5\u51b5\u5c31\u662f\u8fd9\u4e9b\u3002<\/a> (w\u01d2 su\u01d2 zh\u012b dao de q\u00edng ku\u00e0ng ji\u00f9 sh\u00ec zh\u00e8 xi\u0113) All I know is that this is the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4ed6\u6240\u542c\u8bf4\u7684\u6d88\u606f\u90fd\u5047\u7684\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 su\u01d2 t\u012bng shu\u014d de xi\u0101o xi d\u014du ji\u01ce de) The news that he heard is completely false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spoken Chinese, \u6240 (su\u01d2) can be removed from the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aspect particles \u52a8\u6001\u52a9\u8bcd (d\u00f2ng t\u00e0i zh\u00f9 c\u00ed): \u7740,\u4e86,\u8fc7 and \u6765\u7740<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u7740 (zhe), \u4e86 (le) and \u8fc7 (guo) are all the 5th tone, and mainly used to express the status of an action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7740 is used after the verb to express that the action is ongoing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Adverbs, such as \u6b63<\/a> (zh\u00e8ng), \u5728<\/a> (z\u00e0i) and \u6b63\u5728<\/a> (zh\u00e8ng z\u00e0i) can be used before the verb, and the sentence often ends with the particle \u5462<\/a> (ne).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"zhe,<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u6bd4\u8d5b<\/a>\u6b63<\/a>\u5728\u8fdb\u884c\u7740\u3002<\/a> (b\u01d0 s\u00e0i zh\u00e8ng z\u00e0i j\u00ecn x\u00edng zhe.) The game is in progress.
<\/a>\u4ed6\u4eec<\/a>\u6b63<\/a>\u5403<\/a>\u7740<\/a>\u996d\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 men zh\u00e8ng ch\u012b zhe f\u00e0n) They are having a meal.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7740 can be used in the present tense, past tense and future tense<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Present tense:
\u73b0\u5728\u96e8\u6b63\u4e0b\u7740\u5462\uff0c\u4f60\u5f85\u4e00\u4f1a\u513f\u518d\u8d70\u3002<\/a> (xi\u00e0n z\u00e0i y\u01d4 zh\u00e8ng xi\u00e0 zhe ne, n\u01d0 d\u0101i y\u012b hu\u00ecr z\u00e0i z\u01d2u.) It is raining now, you can stay for a while and leave later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past tense:
\u90a3\u5929\u4ed6\u56de\u6765\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u96e8\u6b63\u4e0b\u7740\u5462\u3002<\/a> (n\u00e0 ti\u0101n t\u0101 hu\u00ed lai de sh\u00ed h\u00f2u, y\u01d4 zh\u00e8ng xi\u00e0 zhe ne) It was raining on the day that he returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future tense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u660e\u5929\u65e9\u4e0a\u6211\u6b63\u5f00\u7740\u4f1a\uff0c\u54ea\u6709\u65f6\u95f4\u53bb\u5462\uff1f<\/a> (m\u00edng ti\u0101n z\u01ceo shang w\u01d2 zh\u00e8ng k\u0101i zhe hu\u00ec, n\u01ce y\u01d2u sh\u00ed ji\u0101n q\u00f9 ne?) = I have a meeting tomorrow morning, how will I have time to go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7740 can be used after a verb to express the continuation of an action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you use \u7740 in this way, you do NOT need to add \u6b63, \u5728 or \u6b63\u5728 before the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u706f\u8fd8\u5f00\u7740\u5462\u3002<\/a> (d\u0113ng h\u00e1i k\u0101i zhe ne.) = The light is still on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5979\u7a7f\u7740\u4e00\u6761\u7ea2\u88d9\u5b50\u3002<\/a>(t\u0101 chu\u0101n zhe y\u012b ti\u00e1o h\u00f3ng q\u00fan zi.) = She is in a red skirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e86 can be used after a verb to express the action is complete<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It can be used in present perfect tense, past or future perfect tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past tense: \u90a3\u5929\u6211\u4e0b\u4e86\u8bfe\u5c31\u53bb\u56fe\u4e66\u9986<\/a>\u3002(n\u00e0 ti\u0101n w\u01d2 xi\u00e0 le k\u00e8 ji\u00f9 q\u00f9 t\u00fa sh\u016b gu\u01cen.)
I went to the library once I had finished that day\u2019s class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Present tense: \u6211\u4e0b\u4e86\u8bfe\u6765\u5230\u4e86\u56fe\u4e66\u9986<\/a>\u3002 (w\u01d2 xi\u00e0 le k\u00e8 l\u00e1i d\u00e0o le t\u00fa sh\u016b gu\u01cen.) = I am going to the library after my class has finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future tense: \u5e0c\u671b\u660e\u5929\u4f60\u6765\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u5df2\u7ecf\u5b8c\u6210\u4e86\u6240\u6709\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002<\/a> (x\u012b w\u00e0ng m\u00edng ti\u0101n n\u01d0 l\u00e1i de sh\u00ed h\u00f2u, w\u01d2 y\u01d0 j\u012bng w\u00e1n ch\u00e9ng le su\u01d2 y\u01d2u g\u014dng zu\u00f2.) I hope that when you come tomorrow, I shall have finished all the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e86 can be used after an adjective to express a change has come true or a new situation has occurred.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u5934\u53d1\u767d\u4e86\u3002<\/a> (t\u00f3u f\u0101 b\u00e1i le) = The hair has turned white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u82f9\u679c\u7ea2\u4e86\u3002<\/a> (p\u00edng gu\u01d2 h\u00f3ng le) = The apple has turned red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fc7 can be used after a verb to express the action has finished<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u5403\u8fc7\u996d\u518d\u8d70\u3002<\/a> (ch\u012b gu\u00f2 f\u00e0n z\u00e0i z\u01d2u.) = Leave after the meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5f53\u6211\u4eec\u8d76\u5230\u5267\u9662\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u7b2c\u4e00\u573a\u5df2\u7ecf\u6f14\u8fc7\u4e86\u3002<\/a>  (d\u0101ng w\u01d2 men g\u01cen d\u00e0o j\u00f9 yu\u00e0n, d\u00ec y\u012b ch\u01ceng y\u01d0 j\u012bng y\u01cen gu\u00f2 le) = After we got to the theatre, the first show had already finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fc7 can also express what has happened before<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here we will add \u66fe\u7ecf<\/a> (c\u00e9ng j\u012bng) or \u5df2\u7ecf<\/a> (y\u01d0 j\u012bng) before the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u770b\u8fc7\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u3002<\/a> (w\u01d2 k\u00e0n gu\u00f2 zh\u00e8 b\u011bn sh\u016b.) = I have read this book before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4ed6\u66fe\u7ecf\u53bb\u8fc7\u4e2d\u56fd\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 c\u00e9ng j\u012bng q\u00f9 gu\u00f2 zh\u014dng gu\u00f3.) = He has been to China before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fd9\u4ef6\u4e8b\u5df2\u7ecf\u8ba8\u8bba\u8fc7\u4e86\u3002<\/a> (zh\u00e8 ji\u00e0n sh\u00ec y\u01d0 j\u012bng t\u01ceo l\u00f9n gu\u00f2 le.) = This issue has already been discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next two examples show how to negate a sentence that include the particle \u8fc7 (gu\u00f2):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Chinese<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

To express that an action is complete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5403\u8fc7\u996d\u4e86<\/a>\u2014\u2014\u8fd8\u6ca1\u5403\u5462<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(ch\u012b gu\u00f2 f\u00e0n le) —- (h\u00e1i m\u00e9i ch\u012b ne)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have had the meal  \u2014\u2014 Have not had the meal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To express something that has happened before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5403\u8fc7\u7c73\u996d<\/a>\u2014\u2014\u6ca1\u5403\u8fc7\u7c73\u996d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(ch\u012b gu\u00f2 m\u01d0 f\u00e0n) —- (m\u00e9i ch\u012b gu\u00f2 m\u01d0 f\u00e0n)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have eaten rice  \u2014\u2014 Have never eaten rice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fc7 can also be used after an adjective to express that there was some situation in the past.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In this situation we need to define the time, which means the sentence must compare with the current situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u524d\u51e0\u5929\u51b7\u8fc7\u4e00\u9635\u3002<\/a> (qi\u00e1n j\u01d0 ti\u0101n l\u011bng gu\u00f2 y\u012b zh\u00e8n) = It has been cold few the last few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we negate this sentence, we need to add \u4ece\u6765<\/a> (c\u00f3ng l\u00e1i) or  \u8fc7\u53bb\u6ca1(\u6709)<\/a> (gu\u00f2 qu m\u00e9i).  \u8fd9\u4e48<\/a> (zh\u00e8 me) is also added before the adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8fd9\u91cc\u4ece\u6765\u6ca1\u6709\u8fd9\u4e48\u51b7\u8fc7\u3002<\/a> (zh\u00e8 l\u01d0 c\u00f3ng l\u00e1i m\u00e9i y\u01d2u zh\u00e8 me l\u011bng gu\u00f2) =<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has never been so cold here before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6765\u7740 (l\u00e1i zhe) is always used in spoken Chinese, to express something that has happened before<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u6765\u7740<\/a> (l\u00e1i zhe) is always used at the end of a sentence. We do NOT use \u4e86 (le) or \u8fc7 (guo) in these sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6700\u8fd1\u4f60\u90fd\u5fd9\u4ec0\u4e48\u6765\u7740\uff1f<\/a> (zu\u00ec j\u00ecn n\u01d0 d\u014du m\u00e1ng sh\u00e9n me l\u00e1i zhe.) What have you been busy with recently?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u521a\u624d\u4ed6\u8bf4\u4ec0\u4e48\u6765\u7740\uff1f<\/a> (g\u0101ng c\u00e1i t\u0101 shu\u014d sh\u00e9n me l\u00e1i zhe?) What did he just say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Other Chinese Particles \u5176\u4ed6\u52a9\u8bcd (q\u00ed t\u0101 zh\u00f9 c\u00ed): \u4f3c\u7684, \u4e00\u6837 and \u4e00\u822c<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u4f3c\u7684<\/a> (s\u00ec de), \u4e00<\/a>\u6837<\/a> (y\u012b y\u00e0ng),  and \u4e00\u822c<\/a> (y\u012b b\u0101n) are used after words or phrases to make up comparative phrases. This are mainly used to express a metaphor or explain a situation that is similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5979\u6b63\u5904\u5728\u82b1\u4e00\u6837\u7684\u5e74\u7eaa\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 zh\u00e8ng ch\u01d4 z\u00e0i hu\u0101 y\u012b y\u00e0ng de ni\u00e1n j\u00ec.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is the same age as the flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4ed6\u98de\u4e5f\u4f3c\u7684\u8dd1\u6765\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 f\u0113i y\u011b s\u00ec de p\u01ceo l\u00e1i.) He running so fast it\u2019s as though he was flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4ed6\u51e0\u5929\u6ca1\u5403\u996d\u4f3c\u7684\u3002<\/a> (t\u0101 j\u01d0 ti\u0101n m\u00e9i ch\u012b f\u00e0n s\u00ec de.) He looks like he has not eaten a meal for several days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
