Many of you may be completely new to Chinese, and feel a bit overwhelmed by how different this language is compared to your own native one. We\u2019ve recently posted introductory articles on Essential words and phrases<\/a>, and Chinese greetings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, let\u2019s take it up a notch, and learn some simple dialogues based on four situations that are common in China. Additionally, the sentences used in these examples, can be used in many other situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each sentence of Chinese characters are linked to a breakdown, so you can click on each part of the dialogue and find out the meaning of each word and also how to pronounce the words correctly. To hear the Chinese, click on the speaker button on the left side of character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a bonus dialogue if you\u2019re feeling confident. Most supermarkets have a combination of both \u2018pick-your-own\u2019 and pre-packed fruits, veggies, rice and dried goods, but sometimes it\u2019s not clear whether they need to be weighed and a price added to your package. You can ask a shop assistant the following to prevent getting caught out when you get to the checkouts. It\u2019s rare that anyone will help you get a price, so you either need to go back to the weighing station, or leave your dreams of guacamole (and avocados) behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the above example, you can see a useful sentence pattern: this + \u8fd8\u662f<\/a> + that ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this situation it is used to offer 2 options and can be translated to mean \u2018or\u2019. Although it is a question, there\u2019s no need to add the question particle, \u5417 (ma), at the end of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, depending on the situation, you might be asked how many people are in your party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u670d\u52a1\u5458 Waiter: How many people? (j\u01d0 w\u00e8i) \u51e0\u4f4d<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are not asked and you need to request a certain amount of seats use the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5ba2\u6237 Customer: # + \u4f4d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we book tables or seats, we use the word \u4f4d, which means seat or place, instead of \u4eba or \u2018people\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

apple juice (w\u01d2 y\u00e0o p\u00edng gu\u01d2 zh\u012b)  \u6211\u8981\u82f9\u679c\u6c41<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 bottles of beer (w\u01d2 y\u00e0o li\u01ceng p\u00edng p\u00ed ji\u01d4) \u6211\u8981\u4e24\u74f6\u5564\u9152<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sentence uses the simple sentence pattern subject + verb + object, which is extremely useful and commonly used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we ask for 2 of something in Chinese, we do not use the usual number 2, which is \u4e8c. The word is changed to \u4e24. In the example, we also see the measure word for bottle, \u74f6. However, if you were to use \u4e2a, the waiter would still understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do not place your order at the bar, the waiter may ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u60a8\u597d\uff0c\u8bf7\u95ee\u662f\u73b0\u5728\u70b9\u5355\u5417\uff1f<\/a>(n\u00edn h\u01ceo, q\u01d0ng w\u00e8n sh\u00ec xi\u00e0n z\u00e0i di\u01cen d\u0101n ma?)  Hi, Would you like to order now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to ask them to give you some time to look, just say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FYI, don\u2019t be surprised if the conversation swerves quickly into a topic you might find a little inappropriate, such as \u2018how much money do you earn? (shhh, It\u2019s a secret.)\u2019, or \u2018do you know about [enter own risque political conversation here]?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In oral Chinese, you can remove the phrase \u2018I want\u2019 (\u6211\u8981), as it is implied within the context of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
