If you’re planning a trip to China, you might not be sure where to visit. Since China is the 4th largest country in the world there’s plenty of places for you to choose from, whether you’re into history and sightseeing or just want to relax!<\/p>\n

1. \u5175\u9a6c\u4fd1<\/a> (b\u012bngm\u01cey\u01d2ng) Terracotta Army<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Terracotta Army can be found in Xi\u2019an \u897f\u5b89<\/a> (x\u012b\u00a0\u0101n) and was only discovered 40 years ago by a group of farmers digging a water well. There are three burial pits within the Qin Shi Huang tomb to experience that are estimated to hold around 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses all made from terracotta. The Terracotta Army site is awe-inspiring, not only due to its scale but because it is said that each warrior is based on a soldier that once existed.<\/p>\n

Whilst you’re in Xi’an, take a long walk along the 8 miles (12 km) of city walls that surround the city as well as visiting the Giang Wild Goose Pagoda and Drum and Bell Towers.<\/p>\n

2. \u4e09\u4e9a<\/a>\uff08s\u0101ny\u00e0) Sanya<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sanya was once described to me as the \u2018Chinese Hawaii\u2019 and with its tropical climate, pristine sandy beaches, and numerous sights and activities to try out, it\u2019s no surprise that Sanya has become a popular tourist destination. Sanya is situated in the south of Hainan \u6d77\u5357<\/a> (h\u01cei\u00a0n\u00e1n) province and is surrounded by many small islands, including Wuzhizhou Island \u8708\u652f\u6d32\u5c9b<\/a> (w\u00fa\u00a0zh\u012b\u00a0zh\u014du\u00a0d\u01ceo). Not only can you surf, sail and sunbathe, but you can also dive down through the crystal clear sea to the coral reefs and swim with beautiful tropical fish.<\/p>\n

3. \u4e07\u91cc\u957f\u57ce<\/a> (w\u00e0nl\u01d0ch\u00e1ngch\u00e9ng) The Great Wall of China<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Great Wall is a must-see for anyone interested in Chinese culture and history. Originally built to protect the Chinese Empire, the wall spans an amazing 21,196\u00a0km (13,171\u00a0mi). \u4e07\u91cc<\/a>\u00a0(w\u00e0nl\u01d0) figuratively means \u2018endless\u2019,\u00a0\u957f\u57ce<\/a> (ch\u00e1ngch\u00e9ng) meaning \u2018long wall\u2019. It\u2019s not recommended that you try and walk to the whole wall, but there are many sections to visit, each boasting a unique feel and experience. Having visited the Wall myself, I would also suggest going to a less travelled section of the wall to avoid the crowds!<\/p>\n

4. \u676d\u5dde<\/a> (h\u00e1ngzh\u014du) Hangzhou<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hangzhou has often been referred to as the \u2018Venice of China\u2019 due to its Grand Canal \u5927\u8fd0\u6cb3<\/a> (d\u00e0\u00a0y\u00f9n\u00a0h\u00e9) also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Dating back to the 5th<\/sup> Century BC, the canals of Hangzhou provided an opportunity to sell speciality wares of Hangzhou including silk, tea and Chinese folding fans. Hangzhou is also well known for its peaceful West Lake \u897f\u6e56 <\/a> (x\u012b\u00a0h\u00fa) featuring beautiful pagodas, temples and gardens.<\/p>\n

5. \u6566\u714c\u77f3\u7a9f<\/a> (d\u016bn hu\u00e1ng sh\u00ed k\u016b) Dunhuang Caves<\/h2>\n

These caves should more specifically be referred to as the Mogao Caves \u83ab\u9ad8\u77f3\u7a9f<\/a> (m\u00f2g\u0101osh\u00edk\u016b) and are one of the three most famous Buddhist sculptural sites in China. One of the most breathtaking things about the Mogao Caves is its desolate desert location and this is probably why these elaborate cave paintings served as images for meditation.\u00a0 Many of the paintings and sculptures depicted Buddhist beliefs and stories for those who were unable to read. The caves are not only a tourist attraction but still a place that many take a pilgrimage to every year.<\/p>\n

6. \u6210\u90fd<\/a> (ch\u00e9ng\u00a0d\u016b) Chengdu<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Chengdu is most famous for being home to the largest Giant Panda Breeding facility in the world. You can visit the Panda habitat, take a picture and if you\u2019re prepared to get messy, you can even clean the panda cages.<\/p>\n

7. \u4e09\u5ce1\u5927\u575d<\/a> (s\u0101n xi\u00e1 d\u00e0 b\u00e0) Three Gorges Dam<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that crosses the Yangtze River \u957f\u6c5f<\/a> (ch\u00e1ng\u00a0ji\u0101ng) in the province of Hubei \u6e56\u5317 <\/a>(h\u00fa\u00a0b\u011bi). As the world\u2019s largest power station, it is both impressive and controversial, and a must-see. Since the dam\u2019s completion, the scenery surrounding has undertaken a transformation, and the White Emperor City or Baidi City \u767d\u5e1d\u57ce<\/a> (b\u00e1i\u00a0d\u00ec\u00a0ch\u00e9ng) that was once hidden is now visible and accessible by footbridge or ferry. You can also take a river cruise to view the Three Gorges \u4e09\u5ce1<\/a> (s\u0101n\u00a0xi\u00e1) and witness the changing landscape of the Yangtze River.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

8. \u62c9\u8428<\/a> (l\u0101s\u00e0) Lhasa, Capital City of Tibet<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Meaning \u2018Holy Land\u2019 in Tibetan, Lhasa is the centre of spirituality, culture and history for the Tibetan religion. Lhasa is shrouded in mystery as it is not as easy to visit as other parts of China. However, if you are lucky enough to go, you can\u2019t miss the giant Nietang Buddha, Potala Palace at Mt Potala \u5e03\u8fbe\u62c9\u5c71<\/a> (b\u00f9\u00a0d\u00e1\u00a0l\u0101\u00a0sh\u0101n) and Jokhang temple \u5927\u662d\u5bfa<\/a> (d\u00e0\u00a0zh\u0101o\u00a0s\u00ec).<\/p>\n

9. \u6842\u6797<\/a> (gu\u00ec\u00a0l\u00edn) Guilin<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Guilin takes its name from the Sweet Osmanthus trees that grow abundantly in the area and has become China\u2019s most popular holiday destination mainly due to its natural landscapes and history. There are many different ways to experience Guilin, and for the more adventurous of you, you can travel the Li River \u6f13\u6c5f<\/a> (l\u00ed\u00a0ji\u0101ng) by bamboo raft or hike along the banks of the Yulong River \u9047\u9f99\u6cb3<\/a> (y\u00f9longh\u00e9) to Moon Hill \u6708\u4eae\u5c71<\/a> (yu\u00e8\u00a0liangsh\u0101n). Don\u2019t forget to visit the spectacular Reed Flute Caves \u82a6\u7b1b\u5ca9<\/a> (l\u00fad\u00edy\u00e1n), a natural limestone cave lit with an array of tiny coloured lights.<\/p>\n

10. \u53a6\u95e8<\/a> (xi\u00e0\u00a0m\u00e9n) Xiamen<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Xiamen is the tourist city located in Fujian \u798f\u5efa<\/a> (f\u00fa\u00a0ji\u00e0n) province. Known as the \u2018Gate of China\u2019, Xiamen is still a major seaport and attracts many visitors to its seascapes, clean air and pleasant environment. One of the biggest attractions for tourists is the numerous locations to try different food and drink. Seafood is extremely popular due to its freshness and availability. Gulangyu Island or Piano Island \u9f13\u6d6a\u5c7f<\/a> (g\u01d4\u00a0l\u00e0ng\u00a0y\u01d4) is a scenic island off the coast of Xiamen that provides a relaxing atmosphere away from the city. The botanical gardens are also a great opportunity to relax and enjoy some peace and tranquillity.<\/p>\n
