There are 31 different \u2018strokes\u2019 to learn when writing Chinese characters. A \u2018stroke\u2019 is a line or combination of lines that form a part of a Chinese character. Although at first glance, a character may look like it has 5 individual lines, in fact, may only have 4 strokes. This happens because a \u2018stroke\u2019, unlike a \u2018line\u2019, is made without removing the pen from the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since it is difficult to know just from looking at a character how many strokes (and which strokes) it takes to complete the character, you need to learn both the different stroke types and also how to write a character. Throughout this article, we have added step-by-step strokes for each stroke type and character we discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can use the Written Chinese Online Dictionary<\/a>, to see stroke animations for both Simplified and Traditional characters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, you can see the simplified stroke animations for \u2018to recognize\u2019 \u8ba4\u8bc6<\/a> (r\u00e8n shi) and also the traditional stroke animations \u8a8d\u8b58<\/a> (r\u00e8n shi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t already learned the 8 most basic strokes<\/strong> that include \u6a2a (h\u00e9ng), \u7ad6 (sh\u00f9), \u6487 (pi\u011b), and \u637a (n\u00e0) I recommend learning those first. This article focuses on 12 more ‘advanced’ strokes, but you can learn the first 8 strokes in our previous article, Chinese Character Stroke Rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ad6\u63d0<\/a> (sh\u00f9 t\u00ed)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The \u7ad6\u63d0<\/a> (sh\u00f9 t\u00ed) stroke is a \u2018vertical tick to the right\u2019. The downward part of the stroke should be straight, immediately followed by a sharp tick. Press your pen down and lift up to create the \u2018tick\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some good examples of the \u7ad6\u63d0 (sh\u00f9 t\u00ed) stroke are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ad6\u5f2f<\/a> (sh\u00f9 w\u0101n)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The \u7ad6\u5f2f<\/a> (sh\u00f9 w\u0101n) character is a vertical bend. The curve from the downward line to the right curve should be smooth and completed without removing the pen from the paper. The vertical line is almost always longer than the horizontal one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ea2\u9152<\/a> (h\u00f3ng  ji\u01d4) – red wine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6487\u6298<\/a> (pi\u011b zh\u00e9)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When writing the \u6487\u6298<\/a> (pi\u011b zh\u00e9) stroke, begin on the right-hand side and write the downward part of the stroke. Lift the pen slightly when beginning the horizontal stroke. If one of the strokes is long, then the other must be shorter, and vice versa. The angle of the stroke should be less than 90 degrees but more than 45 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6487\u70b9<\/a>\u00a0(pi\u011b di\u01cen) or left-slanting downward stroke is a more obtuse version of the \u6487\u6298 (pi\u011b zh\u00e9) stroke mentioned above. The stroke combines a down-left stroke with a long dot. When making the \u2018dot\u2019 stroke, press harder before lifting the pen up. Both strokes should be around the same length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6a2a\u6487 (h\u00e9ng pi\u011b) is a straight horizontal line from left to right, followed by a downwards stroke to the left. The left downstroke should be a little longer than the horizontal line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6a2a\u94a9<\/a> (h\u00e9ng g\u014du) is a horizontal hook that should be written quickly, with the final \u2018hook\u2019 being short and with the pen pressed harder into the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5367\u94a9<\/a> (w\u00f2g\u014du) or the ‘lying hook’, should be written as a slight arch from the upper left to the lower right and completed with a left hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u659c\u94a9<\/a> (xi\u00e9 g\u014du) is the slanting hook stroke and should be longer than the lying hook \u5367\u94a9 (w\u00f2g\u014du). Begin at the top left corner and end in the lower right. The bottom of the line should be slightly arched. Press the pen down slightly to add the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ad6\u5f2f\u94a9<\/a> (sh\u00f9 w\u0101n g\u014du) is the vertically curved hook. The vertical stroke tends to be shorter than the horizontal one that follows. The stroke should be smooth with added pressure on the pen when adding the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
