In this article, we\u2019re going to look at two related topics: location and directions in Chinese. First, I\u2019m going to introduce some basic location words and then some sentence patterns that you can use to describe where objects are, if an object exists and locations as description. The second part of the article will focus more on phrases and vocabulary that will be useful when asking for and giving directions in Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Location in Chinese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) or location nouns are used to express both direction and location. These can be divided into two sections, \u5355\u7eaf\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (d\u0101n ch\u00fan f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) simple localizers and \u5408\u6210\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (h\u00e9 ch\u00e9ng f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) compound localizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following characters are \u5355\u7eaf\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (d\u0101n ch\u00fan f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) Simple localizers: \u4e0a<\/a> (sh\u00e0ng), \u4e0b<\/a> (xi\u00e0), \u524d<\/a> (qi\u00e1n), \u540e<\/a> (h\u00f2u), \u5de6<\/a> (zu\u01d2), \u53f3<\/a> (y\u00f2u), \u91cc<\/a> (l\u01d0), \u5916<\/a> (w\u00e0i), \u4e1c<\/a> (d\u014dng), \u5357<\/a> (n\u00e1n), \u897f<\/a> (x\u012b), \u5317<\/a> (b\u011bi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a character such as \u4e4b<\/a> (zh\u012b) and  \u4ee5<\/a> (y\u01d0) is added before the simple localizer or \u9762<\/a> (mi\u00e0n), \u8fb9<\/a> (bian), \u5934<\/a> (tou), \u65b9<\/a> (f\u0101ng) and \u90e8<\/a> (b\u00f9) after the simple localizer and this will create a compound localizer, such as the following: or example:  \u4ee5\u4e0a<\/a> (y\u01d0 sh\u00e0ng), \u4e4b\u524d<\/a> (zh\u012b qi\u00e1n), \u91cc\u9762<\/a> (l\u01d0 mi\u00e0n), \u5916\u8fb9<\/a> (w\u00e0i bian), \u540e\u5934<\/a> (h\u00f2u tou), \u524d\u65b9<\/a> (qi\u00e1n f\u0101ng), \u897f\u90e8<\/a> (x\u012b b\u00f9), \u5de6\u53f3<\/a> (zu\u01d2 y\u00f2u) and \u5185\u5916<\/a> (n\u00e8i w\u00e0i).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally, the \u5355\u7eaf\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (d\u0101n ch\u00fan f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) simple localizer can not be used alone, except when part of a commonly used phrase such as \u4e0a\u6709\u8001<\/a>\u4e0b\u6709\u5c0f<\/a> (sh\u00e0ng y\u01d2u l\u01ceo  xi\u00e0 y\u01d2u xi\u01ceo), meaning \u2018to support both your elderly parents and your children\u2019 and \u524d\u6015\u72fc \u540e\u6015\u864e<\/a> (qi\u00e1n p\u00e0 l\u00e1ng h\u00f2u p\u00e0 h\u01d4), which means \u2018to be overcautious\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5408\u6210\u65b9\u4f4d\u8bcd<\/a> (h\u00e9 ch\u00e9ng f\u0101ng w\u00e8i c\u00ed) compound localizers can be used alone. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5916\u9762\u5f88\u70ed<\/a>\u3002(w\u00e0i mian h\u011bn r\u00e8) It is hot outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the simplest use of a localizer is to express the location, sometimes \u4e0a<\/a> (sh\u00e0ng) , \u4e2d<\/a> (zh\u014dng) and \u4e0b<\/a> (xi\u00e0) do not express a physical location:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The character \u5728<\/a> (z\u00e0i) can be used in several different ways, but in this instance it is being used as \u2018is located at\/in\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing the Location of an Object<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you wish to say that an object is in a particular place, use the following sentence pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Object + \u5728 (z\u00e0i) + place + (\u7684 (de)) + location<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u88d9\u5b50\u5728\u8863\u67dc(\u7684)\u91cc\u9762<\/a>\u3002(q\u00fan zi z\u00e0i y\u012b gu\u00ec (de) l\u01d0 mi\u00e0n) The dress is in the wardrobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u7684<\/a> (de) particle is used here to mean \u2018of the\u2019, so the sentence basically reads<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018the dress is located in the wardrobe\u2019s inside\u2019. You can read about the \u7684 (de) particle in more detail in the article, How to use the \u2018de\u2019 particles \u7684, \u5f97 and \u5730 in Chinese<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indicating an object exists or not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Chinese, the character \u6709<\/a> (y\u01d2u) is more often used to say \u2018have\u2019 or combined with \u6ca1<\/a> (m\u00e9i) to produce \u6ca1\u6709<\/a> (m\u00e9i y\u01d2u), meaning \u2018not to have\u2019. To indicate that something exists in a place, we use the \u6709 (y\u01d2u) character. Essentially we are saying that a place \u2018has\u2019 an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u684c\u5b50\u4e0a\u6709\u676f\u5b50<\/a>\u3002(zhu\u014d zi sh\u00e0ng y\u01d2u b\u0113i zi) There is a cup on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distances – Near and Far<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can also add an adverb, such as \u5f88<\/a> (h\u011bn), to say \u2018very\u2019 far \u5f88\u8fdc<\/a> (h\u011bn yu\u01cen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When talking about distances, we frequently use the character \u79bb<\/a> (l\u00ed), which means \u2018away from\u2019. The sentence will be something like, \u2018this place + away from + this place +[is] far\/near\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specific Distances<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you need to tell someone  that a place is specific distance from somewhere, we add \u6709<\/a> (y\u01d2u) + distance. Remember, \u6709<\/a> (y\u01d2u) means \u2018to have\u2019, so the sentence becomes \u2018a place + away from + a place + has this much distance between them\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A simple way to ask someone how to get somewhere is by asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking and Giving Directions in Chinese<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here are some simple instructions for giving and taking directions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The character \u5f80<\/a> (w\u01ceng) means \u2018to go in the direction of\u2019 and the final character, \u62d0<\/a> (gu\u01cei) means \u2018turn\u2019. The following sentence pattern is to say \u2018make a right\/left turn\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5f80<\/a> (w\u01ceng) + direction + \u62d0<\/a> (gu\u01cei)\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5f80\u5de6\u62d0<\/a>\u3002(w\u01ceng zu\u01d2 gu\u01cei) Turn left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To tell someone to go straight forward, you don\u2019t need to use \u5f80<\/a> (w\u01ceng), just use the phrase,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
