Conjunctions are words that connect phrases and clauses together to form a sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In English, some examples of conjunction words are \u2018and\u2019, \u2018but\u2019, \u2018if\u2019 and \u2018because\u2019. These words are very similar within the Chinese language, but often follow specific rules and patterns for them to make sense. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below is the first half of our lesson on Chinese conjunctions that focuses mainly on \u2018and\u2019 \u2018or\u2019 and \u2018but\u2019 in Chinese, followed by \u2018because\u2019, \u2018so\u2019, and \u2018if\u2019 in the next half. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to different connecting components, Chinese conjunctions can be divided into two types:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Used to connect words and phrases:<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    \u548c<\/span><\/a> (h\u00e9), <\/span>\u8ddf<\/span><\/a> (g\u0113n), <\/span>\u540c<\/span><\/a> (t\u00f3ng), <\/span>\u4e0e<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d4), <\/span>\u53ca<\/span><\/a> (j\u00ed), <\/span>\u4ee5\u53ca<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d0 j\u00ed), <\/span>\u6216<\/span><\/a> (hu\u00f2) etc<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Used to connect clauses and sentences:<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      \u867d\u7136<\/span><\/a> (su\u012b r\u00e1n), <\/span>\u5c3d\u7ba1<\/span><\/a> (j\u01d0n gu\u01cen), <\/span>\u7136\u800c<\/span><\/a> (r\u00e1n \u00e9r), <\/span>\u56e0\u6b64<\/span><\/a> (y\u012bn c\u01d0), <\/span>\u6240\u4ee5<\/span><\/a> (su\u01d2 y\u01d0), <\/span>\u5e76\u4e14<\/span><\/a> (b\u00ecng qi\u011b), <\/span>\u800c\u4e14<\/span><\/a> (\u00e9r qi\u011b), <\/span>\u8fd8\u662f<\/span><\/a> (h\u00e1i sh\u00ec) <\/span>\u7531\u4e8e<\/span><\/a> (y\u00f3u y\u00fa), <\/span>\u56e0\u4e3a<\/span><\/a> (y\u012bn w\u00e8i), <\/span>\u53ea\u6709<\/span><\/a> (zh\u01d0 y\u01d2u), <\/span> \u4e0d\u7ba1<\/span><\/a> (b\u00f9 gu\u01cen) etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes, the 2nd type of conjunction can also be used to connect a word or phrase. They can also be used alone, or used with another conjunction or conjunctive adverb in a pair.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Single conjunction:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The east of the city is rainy, but the west of the city is sunny.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Conjunctions used in pairs:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u56e0\u4e3a\u4eca\u5929\u4e0b\u96e8\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u6211\u6ca1\u6709\u51fa\u95e8<\/span><\/a>\u3002(y\u012bn w\u00e8i j\u012bn ti\u0101n xi\u00e0 y\u01d4, su\u01d2 y\u01d0 w\u01d2 m\u00e9i y\u01d2u ch\u016b m\u00e9n.) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I did not go out today, because it was raining.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Conjunctions used with a conjunctive adverb in a pair:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u53ea\u8981\u660e\u5929\u4e0d\u4e0b\u96e8\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5c31\u53bb\u9732\u8425<\/span><\/a>\u3002(zh\u01d0 y\u00e0o m\u00edng ti\u0101n b\u00f9 xi\u00e0 y\u01d4, w\u01d2 men ji\u00f9 q\u00f9 l\u00f9 y\u00edng)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As long as it is not raining tomorrow, we will go camping.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now let\u2019s look at some specific conjunctions in the Chinese language, and how to use them to construction sentences in both spoken and written Chinese.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. <\/span>\u5e76\u5217\u5173\u7cfb<\/span><\/a> (b\u00ecng li\u00e8 gu\u0101n x\u00ec) Parallel or \u2018and\u2019 Relationships<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      \u548c<\/span><\/a> (h\u00e9), <\/span>\u8ddf<\/span><\/a> (g\u0113n), <\/span>\u540c<\/span><\/a> (t\u00f3ng), <\/span>\u4e0e<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d4), <\/span>\u65e2<\/span><\/a> (j\u00ec), <\/span>\u53ca<\/span><\/a> (j\u00ed), <\/span>\u4ee5\u53ca<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d0 j\u00ed), <\/span>\u800c<\/span><\/a> (\u00e9r), <\/span>\u5e76<\/span><\/a> (b\u00ecng)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u548c<\/span><\/a> (h\u00e9), <\/span>\u8ddf<\/span><\/a> (g\u0113n), <\/span>\u540c<\/span><\/a> (t\u00f3ng), <\/span>\u4e0e<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d4) can all work as conjunctions and prepositions. The differences between using them as conjunctions and prepositions are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. If, when used as a conjunction, the subjects change position within the sentence, the meaning does not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For example, in this sentence \u2018he\u2019 and \u2018i\u2019 change positions within the sentence, and still produce the same meaning:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      He and I both like drinking tea.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If they are used as a preposition and the position of the subjects are changed, then the meaning also changes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      2. A modifier can be used in front of the preposition, but can not be used in front of conjunction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


      <\/span>       \u6211\u7ecf\u5e38\u548c\u4ed6\u5f00\u73a9\u7b11<\/span><\/a>\u3002(w\u01d2 j\u012bng ch\u00e1ng h\u00e9 t\u0101 k\u0101i w\u00e1n xi\u00e0o) I often joked with him. \u221a<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u6211\u7ecf\u5e38\u548c\u4ed6\u90fd\u559c\u6b22\u559d\u8336<\/span><\/a>\u3002(w\u01d2 j\u012bng ch\u00e1ng h\u00e9 t\u0101 d\u014du x\u01d0 huan h\u0113 ch\u00e1) He and I often like to drink tea. \u00d7<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      3. The components in front of the preposition can be omitted, but the ones in front of conjunction can not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u548c\u4ed6\u5f00\u73a9\u7b11<\/span><\/a>\u3002(h\u00e9 t\u0101 k\u0101i w\u00e1n xi\u00e0o) joked with him. \u221a<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u548c\u4ed6\u90fd\u559c\u6b22\u559d\u8336<\/span><\/a>\u3002(h\u00e9 t\u0101 d\u014du x\u01d0 huan h\u0113 ch\u00e1) Often liked to drink. \u00d7<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To work as conjunctions, <\/span>\u548c<\/span><\/a> (h\u00e9), <\/span>\u8ddf<\/span><\/a> (g\u0113n), <\/span>\u540c<\/span><\/a> (t\u00f3ng), <\/span>\u4e0e<\/span><\/a> (y\u01d4) can be used to connect nouns. However, \u548c (h\u00e9), \u8ddf (g\u0113n), \u540c (t\u00f3ng) are typically found in spoken Chinese, whereas \u4e0e (y\u01d4) is mostly found in written Chinese. In written Chinese, \u548c (h\u00e9) is always used as the conjunction, \u8ddf (g\u0113n) and \u540c (t\u00f3ng) are always used as prepositions. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Conjunctions can also be used to connect verbs and adjectives:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u8fd0\u52a8\u548c\u996e\u98df\u63a7\u5236\u90fd\u5f88\u91cd\u8981<\/span><\/a>\u3002(y\u00f9n d\u00f2ng h\u00e9 y\u01d0n sh\u00ed k\u00f2ng zh\u00ec d\u014du h\u011bn zh\u00f2ng y\u00e0o.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Exercise and diet are both important.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u5979\u662f\u90a3\u6837\u7684\u53ef\u7231\u548c\u806a\u660e<\/span><\/a>\u3002(t\u0101 sh\u00ec n\u00e0 y\u00e0ng de k\u011b \u00e0i h\u00e9 c\u014dng ming.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      She is so cute and smart.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u53ca<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>j\u00ed) <\/span>and <\/span>\u4ee5\u53ca<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>y\u01d0<\/span> j\u00ed)<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Similarly to \u548c (h\u00e9), \u53ca (j\u00ed) and \u4ee5\u53ca (y\u01d0 j\u00ed) can be used to connect parallel components, but there are differences between them such as importance and order of priority. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u8bf7\u628a\u7eb8\u3001\u7b14\u53ca\u5176\u4ed6\u6587\u5177\u9012\u7ed9\u6211<\/span><\/a>\u3002(q\u01d0ng b\u01ce zh\u01d0, b\u01d0 j\u00ed q\u00ed t\u0101 w\u00e9n j\u00f9 d\u00ec g\u011bi j\u01d0 w\u01d2) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Please hand me the paper, pens and other stationery. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u800c<\/span><\/a> (\u00e9r) and <\/span>\u5e76<\/span><\/a> (b\u00ecng)<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      \u800c (\u00e9r) is always used in written Chinese, and used to connect parallel verbs or adjectives. When\u800c (\u00e9r)  is used to connect verbs, it expresses a relationship between the verbs or progression of a relationship. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When \u800c (\u00e9r) is used to connect adjectives, it expresses a parallel or opposition relationship: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u5979\u770b\u8fc7\u7684\u4e66\u591a\u800c\u6742<\/span><\/a>\u3002(t\u0101 k\u00e0n gu\u00f2 de sh\u016b du\u014d \u00e9r z\u00e1)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      She reads many books but they are varied.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u5e76 (b\u00ecng) is also used to connect predicate clauses, often used in written Chinese. It is also often used to express \u2018furthermore\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u4ed6\u5b8c\u5168\u8d5e\u6210\u5e76\u63a5\u53d7\u4e86\u516c\u53f8\u7684\u5b89\u6392<\/span><\/a>\u3002(t\u0101 w\u00e1n qu\u00e1n z\u00e0n ch\u00e9ng b\u00ecng ji\u0113 sh\u00f2u le g\u014dng s\u012b de \u0101n p\u00e1i.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In addition, \u6216\u8005 (hu\u00f2 zh\u011b) can used in a pair, \u8fd8\u662f (h\u00e1i sh\u00ec) can not. However, \u8fd8\u662f (h\u00e1i sh\u00ec) can be used with \u662f (sh\u00ec) in a pair:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u4f46<\/span><\/a> (d\u00e0n) can also be used alone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u4ed6\u867d\u7136\u5df2\u7ecf\u4e03\u5341\u5c81\u4e86\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u8eab\u4f53\u5f88\u5065\u5eb7<\/span><\/a>\u3002(t\u0101 su\u012b r\u00e1n y\u01d0 j\u012bng q\u012b sh\u00ed su\u00ec le, d\u00e0n sh\u00ec sh\u0113n t\u01d0 h\u011bn ji\u00e0n k\u0101ng.) He is already 70 years old, but in good health. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The usage of \u53ef\u662f (k\u011b sh\u00ec) is similar as \u4f46\u662f (d\u00e0n sh\u00ec). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u96e8\u4e0b\u5f97\u5f88\u5927\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u4ed6\u575a\u6301\u8981\u51fa\u95e8<\/span><\/a>\u3002(y\u01d4 xi\u00e0 de h\u011bn d\u00e0, k\u011b sh\u00ec t\u0101 ji\u0101n ch\u00ed y\u00e0o ch\u016b m\u00e9n.) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is raining heavily outside, but he insists on going out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u53ea\u662f (zh\u01d0 sh\u00ec) is slightly adversative, in that its emphasis is less than \u4f46\u662f (d\u00e0n sh\u00ec) and \u53ef\u662f (k\u011b sh\u00ec). \u4e0d\u8fc7 (b\u00f9 gu\u00f2) is used in a similar way:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u5f88\u597d\uff0c\u53ea\u662f\u592a\u8d35\u4e86<\/span><\/a>\u3002(zh\u00e8 b\u011bn sh\u016b h\u011bn h\u01ceo, zh\u01d0 sh\u00ec t\u00e0i gu\u00ec le) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u6211\u4eec\u60f3\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u529e\u6cd5\uff0c\u7136\u800c\u5374\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u53ef\u884c\u7684<\/span><\/a>\u3002(w\u01d2 men xi\u01ceng le h\u011bn du\u014d b\u00e0n f\u01ce, r\u00e1n \u00e9r qu\u00e8 m\u00e9i y\u01d2u y\u012b g\u00e8 k\u011b x\u00edng de)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We found many methods, but none of them were feasible. <\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
