Getting around is probably one of the first lessons you should learn in Chinese if you\u2019re going to travel within China. This article will introduce some basic vocabulary and phrases to use when taking public transport. You can also take a look at our previous article all about asking for directions and location in Chinese<\/a> to complete the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modes of Transport in Chinese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To say \u2018take\u2019 or \u2018to go by\u2019 a mode of transport, for the most part, the pattern is \u5750<\/a><\/span> (zu\u00f2) + transportation. \u5750  (zu\u00f2) means to sit or take transportation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5750\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (zu\u00f2 ch\u0113) – to go by car<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u51fa\u79df\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (ch\u016b z\u016b ch\u0113) – taxi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u706b\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (hu\u01d2 ch\u0113) – train<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5730\u94c1<\/a><\/span> (d\u00ec ti\u011b) – metro<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u98de\u673a<\/a><\/span> (f\u0113i j\u012b) – plane<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u516c\u5171\u6c7d\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (g\u014dng g\u00f2ng q\u00ec ch\u0113) – bus<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u516c\u4ea4\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (g\u014dng ji\u0101o ch\u0113) is now commonly used in spoken Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The noun for car is \u6c7d\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (q\u00ec ch\u0113), but when used after a verb, as in the example above or \u4e70\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (m\u01cei ch\u0113) \u2018to buy a car\u2019, we remove the \u6c7d (q\u00ec), meaning \u2018steam\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also use the term \u6253\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (d\u01ce ch\u0113) when talking about taking a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To say \u2018ride\u2019, we use the character \u9a91<\/a><\/span> (q\u00ed) instead of \u5750 (zu\u00f2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9a91<\/a><\/span>\u5355\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (q\u00ed d\u0101n ch\u0113) – ride a bike<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6469\u6258\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (m\u00f3 tu\u014d ch\u0113) – motorbike<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9a6c<\/a><\/span> (m\u01ce) – horse<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bicycle can also be \u81ea\u884c\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (z\u00ec x\u00edng ch\u0113).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to talk about going somewhere on foot, then the verb \u8d70 (z\u01d2u) is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8d70\u8def<\/a><\/span> (z\u01d2u l\u00f9) – to walk<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting on or into a vehicle, use the phrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0a<\/a><\/span> (sh\u00e0ng) + vehicle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0a\u8f66<\/a><\/span> (sh\u00e0ng ch\u0113) – Get in the vehicle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting out of a vehicle uses the expression:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0b<\/a><\/span> (xi\u00e0) + vehicle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0b\u5730\u94c1<\/a><\/span> (xi\u00e0 d\u00ec ti\u011b) – Get off the metro<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These can also be used to board or disembark a flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using Public Transportation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u8def<\/a><\/span> (l\u00f9) – road\/route<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ebf<\/a><\/span> (xi\u00e0n) – line (metro line)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8def\u53e3<\/a><\/span> (l\u00f9 k\u01d2u) – crossroads<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7ea2\u7eff\u706f<\/a><\/span> (h\u00f3ng l\u01dc d\u0113ng) – traffic lights<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6389\u5934<\/a><\/span> (di\u00e0o t\u00f3u) – U-turn<\/p>\n\n\n\n
