4. \u56e0\u679c\u5173\u7cfb<\/a><\/span> (y\u012bn gu\u01d2 gu\u0101n x\u00ec) Causal Conjunctions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Commonly used causal conjunctions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u56e0\u4e3a<\/a><\/span> (y\u012bn w\u00e8i), \u7531\u4e8e<\/a><\/span> (y\u00f3u y\u00fa), \u56e0\u6b64<\/a><\/span> (y\u012bn c\u01d0), \u6240\u4ee5<\/a><\/span> (su\u01d2 y\u01d0), \u4ee5\u4fbf<\/a><\/span> (y\u01d0 bi\u00e0n), \u4ee5\u81f4<\/a><\/span> (y\u01d0 zh\u00ec) etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These conjunctions express cause and effect or reason and results, such as \u2018because\u2019, \u2018therefore\u2019 etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A common pair of causal conjunctions are \u56e0\u4e3a<\/a><\/span> (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) \u2026\u6240\u4ee5<\/a><\/span> (su\u01d2 y\u01d0). They are used at the beginning of their clauses or before the predicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Omission of subjects in \u56e0\u4e3a <\/span>(y\u012bn w\u00e8i)\u3002\u3002\u3002\u6240\u4ee5 <\/span>(su\u01d2 y\u01d0) sentences<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the subjects in both the \u56e0\u4e3a (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) clause and the \u6240\u4ee5 (su\u01d2 y\u01d0) clause are identical, the subject can be removed from the second clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this situation, \u56e0\u4e3a (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) is placed after the subject in the first clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u56e0\u4e3a\u660e\u5929\u8981\u4e0a\u5b66\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5979\u5f88\u65e9\u5c31\u7761\u4e86<\/a><\/span>\u3002(y\u012bn w\u00e8i m\u00edng ti\u0101n y\u00e0o sh\u00e0ng xu\u00e9, su\u01d2 y\u01d0 t\u0101 h\u011bn z\u01ceo ji\u00f9 shu\u00ec le) Because she will go to school tomorrow, she went to sleep very early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Order of Clauses<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subject can also be removed from the first clause and the \u6240\u4ee5 (su\u01d2 y\u01d0) can also be omitted from the second clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u56e0\u4e3a\u660e\u5929\u8981\u4e0a\u5b66\uff0c(\u6240\u4ee5)\u5979\u5f88\u65e9\u5c31\u7761\u4e86<\/a><\/span>\u3002(y\u012bn w\u00e8i m\u00edng ti\u0101n y\u00e0o sh\u00e0ng xu\u00e9, (su\u01d2 y\u01d0) t\u0101 h\u011bn z\u01ceo ji\u00f9 shu\u00ec le) Because she will go to school tomorrow, she went to sleep very early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the \u6240\u4ee5 (su\u01d2 y\u01d0)  clause must always be in the second clause, the \u56e0\u4e3a (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) clause can be in either the first or the second clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5979\u8fdf\u5230\u4e86\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u8def\u4e0a\u5835\u8f66<\/a><\/span>\u3002(t\u0101 ch\u00ed d\u00e0o le, y\u012bn w\u00e8i l\u00f9 shang d\u01d4 ch\u0113)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was late because of a traffic jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Omission of connecting words<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is possible to only have either \u56e0\u4e3a (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) or \u6240\u4ee5 (su\u01d2 y\u01d0) in a sentence expressing cause and effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5723\u8bde\u8282\u5feb\u5230\u4e86\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u53bb\u5546\u573a<\/a><\/span>\u3002(sh\u00e8ng d\u00e0n ji\u00e9 ku\u00e0i d\u00e0o le, su\u01d2 y\u01d0 h\u011bn du\u014d r\u00e9n q\u00f9 sh\u0101ng ch\u01ceng.) Christmas is coming, so there are many people in the shopping mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u56e0\u4e3a (y\u012bn w\u00e8i) + noun phrase<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noun phrase + \u6240\u4ee5 (su\u01d2 y\u01d0) situation + \u662f\u56e0\u4e3a<\/a><\/span> (sh\u00ec y\u012bn w\u00e8i) situation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7531\u4e8e (y\u00f3u y\u00fa) can be placed before or after the subject:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situation + \u662f\u7531\u4e8e<\/a><\/span> (sh\u00ec y\u00f3u y\u00fa)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result can be stated first, but \u7531\u4e8e (y\u00f3u y\u00fa) must be preceded by \u662f (sh\u00ec).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. \u6761\u4ef6\u5173\u7cfb<\/a><\/span> (ti\u00e1o ji\u00e0n gu\u0101n x\u00ec) Conditional & Hypothetical Conjunctions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u4e0d\u7ba1<\/a><\/span> (b\u00f9 gu\u01cen), \u53ea\u8981<\/a><\/span> (zh\u01d0 y\u00e0o) and \u9664\u975e\u7b49<\/a><\/span> (ch\u00fa f\u0113i d\u011bng) are all examples of conditional conjunctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8981\u662f<\/a><\/span> (y\u00e0o shi), \u5982\u679c<\/a><\/span> (r\u00fa gu\u01d2), \u5047\u5982<\/a><\/span> (ji\u01ce r\u00fa), \u5047\u4f7f<\/a><\/span> (ji\u01ce sh\u01d0), \u5018\u82e5<\/a><\/span> (t\u01ceng ru\u00f2) and \u5018\u4f7f<\/a><\/span> (t\u01ceng sh\u01d0) are often used to express \u2019if\u2019…then\u2019 situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A conditional conjunction is a single word or phrase used at the beginning of a clause that describes a condition that needs to be met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8981\u662f (y\u00e0o shi) and \u5982\u679c (r\u00fa gu\u01d2) are mainly used in spoken and written Chinese, whereas \u5047\u5982 (ji\u01ce r\u00fa) is more likely to be used in formal speech or written Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5047\u4f7f (ji\u01ce sh\u01d0), \u5018\u82e5 (t\u01ceng ru\u00f2) and \u5018\u4f7f (t\u01ceng sh\u01d0) are usually found in formal written Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no word in Chinese that specifically expresses \u2019then\u2018, but the adverb \u5c31<\/a><\/span> (ji\u00f9) is usually added to the second clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f60\u8981\u662f\u4e0d\u6765\uff0c\u8bf7\u63d0\u524d\u544a\u8bc9\u6211<\/a><\/span>\u3002(n\u01d0 y\u00e0o shi b\u00f9 l\u00e1i, q\u01d0ng t\u00ed qi\u00e1n g\u00e0o su w\u01d2.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do not come, please tell me in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53ea\u8981 (zh\u01d0 y\u00e0o) can be used to express \u2018as long as\u2019. Both \u53ea\u6709 (zh\u01d0 y\u01d2u) and \u53ea\u8981 (zh\u01d0 y\u00e0o) can express conditional conjunctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,  the condition \u53ea\u6709 (zh\u01d0 y\u01d2u) talks about the essential condition, and is used with \u624d<\/a><\/span> (c\u00e1i).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u53ea\u6709\u65e9\u70b9\u8d77\u6765\uff0c\u6211\u624d\u80fd\u8d76\u4e0a\u90a3\u8d9f\u706b\u8f66<\/a><\/span>\u3002(zh\u01d0 y\u01d2u z\u01ceo di\u01cen q\u01d0 lai, w\u01d2 c\u00e1i n\u00e9ng g\u01cen sh\u00e0ng n\u00e0 t\u00e0ng hu\u01d2 ch\u0113.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
