With learning Chinese, unless you know the proper stroke order or have a special character recognizer program on your phone, reading unknown characters is very, very diffhttps:\/\/www.writtenchinese.comicult.<\/p>\n<p>There are situations in public, however, where Chinese characters are displayed with their pinyin. These are great places to begin learning characters! My city, Shenzhen, has pinyin displayed with characters for the metro line stops. The metro is a good place to begin learning characters because you can hear the names of the stations every day and look up the meaning while you wait for your stop! Now, how do you look up the meaning?<\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/apps\/chinese-dictionary-mobile-app\/\">get yourself a snazzy looking mobile dictionary<\/a> with lots of smart tools and features and look up the pinyin!<\/p>\n<p>Need a pinyin keyboard? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/adding-a-chinese-keyboard-to-your-electronic-device\/\">We have instructions for several devices and platforms that you can check out here<\/a>. Most of these signs and things don\u2019t have pinyin, let alone English, so how do we learn from them?<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are two options:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number 1: Handwrite the character<\/li>\n<li>Number 2: Scan the character using an OCR tool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: The handwriting and OCR tools don\u2019t have to just be used to translate characters on the metro, they can also be used to translate street signs, shop names, restaurant menus, product names and of course, translating characters from your Chinese textbooks \ud83d\ude00 <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Handwriting<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s some simple instructions to help you start using the handwriting tool on your mobile phone:<\/p>\n<p>1.Make sure you have a handwriting function on your phone.<br \/>\n(Apple is super simple. Android is a teeny bit less simple, but you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/practice-handwriting-characters-with-your-mobile\">follow the instructions to add a handwriting tool to either your Android or iOS device here<\/a>.)<br \/>\n2. Switch your keyboard to \u2018handwriting\u2019 and write in the character! Open the OCR tool by tapping the \u2018eye\u2019 icon in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/apps\/chinese-dictionary-mobile-app\/\">WCC Dictionary<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/apps\/chinese-dictionary-mobile-app\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3959\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/OCRdash.png\" alt=\"OCRdash\" width=\"364\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/OCRdash.png?w=364&amp;ssl=1 364w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/OCRdash.png?resize=61%2C100&amp;ssl=1 61w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/OCRdash.png?resize=182%2C300&amp;ssl=1 182w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Hover over the text you want to scan. Sometimes, the tool will automatically translate the words for you on the screen, especially if it a known word or phrase. Finally, you can really get to know what the characters mean by tapping the character box. You\u2019ll move to the definition page where you can do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>view example sentences<\/li>\n<li>hear how the character(s) are pronounced<\/li>\n<li>see the pinyin<\/li>\n<li>turn them into a flashcard<\/li>\n<li>see how to write the character<\/li>\n<li>view the traditional character<\/li>\n<li>view the radical breakdown (tap \u2018More Info\u2019 on the right side)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/apps\/chinese-dictionary-mobile-app\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3961\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DEETSPAGE.png\" alt=\"DEETSPAGE\" width=\"364\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DEETSPAGE.png?w=364&amp;ssl=1 364w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DEETSPAGE.png?resize=61%2C100&amp;ssl=1 61w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DEETSPAGE.png?resize=182%2C300&amp;ssl=1 182w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the characters that you will most likely come across and learn first:<br \/>\nStation names include common directional words, like north (<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/bei\/2395\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u5317<\/a> b\u011bi), south (<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/nan\/2174\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u5357<\/a> n\u00e1n), east (<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/dong\/1456\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u4e1c<\/a> d\u014dng), and west (<a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/xi\/1286\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u897f<\/a> x\u012b), as well as frequently used characters for names, like <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/hua\/3382\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u534e<\/a> (hu\u00e1) which refers to China and <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/xiang\/6135\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u9999<\/a> (xi\u0101ng) meaning \u2018fragrant\u2019. You\u2019ll also be able to learn useful place nouns such as \u2018center\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%AD%E5%BF%83&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u4e2d\u5fc3<\/a> (zh\u014dng x\u012bn), \u2018park\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%85%AC%E5%9B%AD&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u516c\u56ed<\/a> (g\u014dng yu\u00e1n) and \u2018village\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/cun\/6316\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u6751<\/a> (c\u016bn).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3962\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2015-07-16-11_48_19-beijing-subway.gif-3000\u00d72054.png\" alt=\"2015-07-16 11_48_19-beijing-subway.gif (3000\u00d72054)\" width=\"370\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2015-07-16-11_48_19-beijing-subway.gif-3000\u00d72054.png?w=370&amp;ssl=1 370w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2015-07-16-11_48_19-beijing-subway.gif-3000\u00d72054.png?resize=89%2C100&amp;ssl=1 89w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2015-07-16-11_48_19-beijing-subway.gif-3000\u00d72054.png?resize=267%2C300&amp;ssl=1 267w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you know the correct pinyin for the characters, you can look up other characters with the same pinyin and see how they are similar, like with <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/hua\/3356\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u82b1<\/a> (hu\u0101) meaning flower , <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/hua\/25109\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u6866<\/a> (hu\u00e0) or birch tree, and <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/hua\/21867\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u54d7<\/a> (hu\u0101) which means clamor.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve handwritten the character using the handwriting function you will also be able to see other words that use that character.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you translate <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/shan\/1827\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u5c71<\/a> (sh\u0101n) you will see that this means mountain or hill. Of course, all the tools and features mentioned in the post can still be used to learn Chinese regardless of where you are in the world.
