The first known compilation of medicinal plants and other substances is the <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A5%9E%E5%86%9C%E6%9C%AC%E8%8D%89%E7%BB%8F&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u795e\u519c\u672c\u8349\u7ecf<\/a> (sh\u00e9nn\u00f3ng b\u011bnc\u01ceo j\u012bng) \u2013 the Divine Farmer&#8217;s Classic of Herbal Medicine, named after the mythical ancient Chinese king <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A5%9E%E5%86%9C&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u795e\u519c<\/a>&nbsp;(sh\u00e9nn\u00f3ng) and dating from around two thousand years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the old days, plants and other substances such as minerals and animal bones would be gathered and collected by doctors and their assistants, who would then combine these substances according to the individual needs of patients.&nbsp;According to Chinese medical theory, each patient should receive a unique treatment specifically made for their individual constitution and imbalances.&nbsp;The patient then takes these herbs home and cooks them together as a kind of soup or tea.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As time went on, doctors noticed that certain kinds of problems were more common than others, and certain herbal formulas had a wide range of applications in treating these common problems.&nbsp;These standard formulas now form the basis of a student&#8217;s education in Chinese herbal medicine, and are studied all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In present-day China, there are still many practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine who prescribe herbal formulas according to this standard model.&nbsp;
