{"id":5937,"date":"2016-11-04T16:53:08","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T08:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/?p=5937"},"modified":"2022-06-03T22:59:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T14:59:41","slug":"food-vocabulary-and-shopping-in-a-chinese-supermarket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/food-vocabulary-and-shopping-in-a-chinese-supermarket\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Vocabulary and Shopping in a Chinese Supermarket"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Food vocabulary in any language is probably the most fun and also most challenging to learn because there are just so many words to get to grips with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some food words share the same Chinese, most of the time this can actually make learning new words easier because you simply add an extra character to create a whole new vegetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, \u841d\u535c (lu\u00f3&nbsp;bo) is radish, whilst \u7ea2\u841d\u535c (h\u00f3ng&nbsp;lu\u00f3&nbsp;bo) with the addition of \u7ea2 meaning red will get you a \u2018red radish\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, vegetables and fruits from the same \u2018family\u2019 may also share a similar character, such as \u5357\u74dc (n\u00e1n&nbsp;gu\u0101) \u2018pumpkin\u2019, \u9ec4\u74dc (hu\u00e1ng&nbsp;gu\u0101)&nbsp;\u2018cucumber\u2019 and \u51ac\u74dc (d\u014dng&nbsp;gu\u0101) \u2018squash\u2019 which all contain the character \u74dc (gu\u0101) meaning \u2018melon or gourd\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some short vocabulary lists to start you off learning some food, drink and household items that you can buy in the supermarket, as well as some useful phrases you might need when shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special Offers in Chinese<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Special offers in the supermarket will usually be highlighted at the end of an aisle or with a colourful tag.
