Many Chinese learners just refer to this tone as having \u2018no tone\u2019 or being \u2018neutral\u2019. However, this \u2018no tone\u2019 actually has rules that can change the way a character or bigram is spoken. The way the 5th Chinese tone is used in spoken Chinese often comes naturally, but you can get to grips with how to use the \u2018neutral\u2019 tone by reading the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Particles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a. Duplication of Nouns and Verbs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Verbs can sometimes be duplicated in Chinese to soften a suggestion or instruction. The second character takes a 5th tone to reflect the sentiment and tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/kankan\/341\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u770b\u770b<\/a> (k\u00e0n kan) means \u2018to take a look\u2019 at something instead of the more harsh sounding, \u2018\u770b\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Names, such as younger sister <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/meimei\/1275\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u59b9\u59b9<\/a> (m\u00e8i mei), old brother <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/gege\/1110\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u54e5\u54e5<\/a> (g\u0113 ge) and father <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/baba\/467\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7238\u7238<\/a> (b\u00e0 ba) use the fifth tone in the second repeated character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
