Did you know there was a 5th tone in Mandarin Chinese? Many Chinese learners just refer to this tone as having \u2018no tone\u2019 or being \u2018neutral\u2019. However, this \u2018no tone\u2019 actually has rules that can change the way a character or bigram is spoken. The way the 5th Chinese tone is used in spoken Chinese often comes naturally, but you can get to grips with how to use the \u2018neutral\u2019 tone by reading the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Particles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

a. Modal Particles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Modal particles are used in Chinese to reflect a specific mood and often use the 5th Chinese tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following are examples of modal particles: \u5427<\/a> , \u5417<\/a>, \u554a<\/a>, \u963f<\/a>, \u5462<\/a> etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b. Monosyllabic Auxiliary Particles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The following are examples of monosyllabic auxiliary particles: \u7740<\/a>, \u4e86<\/a>, \u7684<\/a>, \u5730<\/a> , \u5f97<\/a>, \u4eec<\/a> etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u968f\u7740<\/a> (su\u00ed zhe) following<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u5403\u5b8c\u4e86<\/a> (w\u01d2 ch\u012b w\u00e1n le) I\u2018ve finished eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Noun Suffixes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fifth tone is used for noun suffixes such as \u5934 (tou), \u513f (er) and \u5b50 (zi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5934<\/a> (tou) is not often used in the fifth tone, but does so when it follows a noun, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u751c\u5934<\/a> (ti\u00e1n tou) benefit (lit: sweet taste of success)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e2a\u5934<\/a> (g\u00e8 t\u00f3u) height<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5th tone \u2018\u513f<\/a>\u2019 is used after a noun to suggest something is small or cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u70b9\u513f<\/a> (di\u01cenr) little bit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u82b1\u513f<\/a> (hu\u0101r) a flower<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, \u513f is also spoken widely in Beijing and added to many words such as \u8fd9\u513f<\/a> (zh\u00e8r) here, \u54ea\u513f<\/a> (n\u01cer) where and \u90a3\u513f<\/a> (n\u00e0r) there .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth tone is also used when \u5b50<\/a> (zi) is added to a noun (which it is, often), for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u513f\u5b50<\/a> (\u00e9r zi) son<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u59bb\u5b50<\/a> (q\u012b zi) wife<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u623f\u5b50<\/a> (f\u00e1ng zi) house<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9f3b\u5b50<\/a> (b\u00ed zi) nose<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Duplication of Nouns and Verbs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Verbs can sometimes be duplicated in Chinese to soften a suggestion or instruction. The second character takes a 5th tone to reflect the sentiment and tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u770b\u770b<\/a> (k\u00e0n kan) means \u2018to take a look\u2019 at something instead of the more harsh sounding, \u2018\u770b\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Names, such as younger sister \u59b9\u59b9<\/a> (m\u00e8i mei), old brother \u54e5\u54e5<\/a> (g\u0113 ge) and father \u7238\u7238<\/a> (b\u00e0 ba) use the fifth tone in the second repeated character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Monosyllabic verbs used after the word describing direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Examples of this are: \u56de\u6765<\/a> (hu\u00ed lai), \u51fa\u53bb<\/a> (ch\u016b qu), \u8d70\u51fa\u6765<\/a> (z\u01d2u ch\u016b lai) and \u8dd1\u8fdb\u53bb<\/a> (p\u01ceo j\u00ecn qu)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verb + \u6765\/\u53bb: means the direction of the action<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1\uff09Verb + \u6765 means the action is heading to the speaker and coming closer to the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6b22\u8fce\u56de\u6765<\/b><\/a> (hu\u0101n y\u00edng hu\u00ed lai) Welcome back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Verb + \u53bb indicates that the action is heading away from the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes when location words, such as \u4e0a (sh\u00e0ng) up,\u4e0b (xi\u00e0) down and \u91cc (l\u01d0) in, are used with a noun they take on the 5th tone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5899\u4e0a<\/b><\/a> (qi\u00e1ng shang) on the wall<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5916\u9762<\/b><\/a> (w\u00e0i mian) outside<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fc3\u91cc<\/b><\/a> (x\u012bn li) in the heart<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e61\u4e0b<\/b><\/a> (xi\u0101ng xia) countryside<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Pronouns used with a verb as an object<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If a pronoun, you, he, it etc, is used after a verb the pronoun becomes a 5th tone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8bf7\u4ed6<\/a> (q\u01d0ng t\u0101) invite him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. \u201c\u4e2a\u201d used as a measure word<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u4e2a is the standard measure word used with nouns in Chinese and uses the 5th tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e00\u4e2a<\/a> (y\u012b ge) a\/an<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u90a3\u4e2a<\/a> (n\u00e0 ge) that (one)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. \u201c\u4e00\u201d or \u201c\u4e0d\u201d between two duplicated words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
