You\u2019ll learn some of these differences, as well as some practical ways to use Chinese numerals for discounts, fractions and to make approximations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u57fa\u6570\u8bcd (j\u012b sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) Cardinal numerals and \u5e8f\u6570\u8bcd (x\u00f9 sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) Ordinal numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%9F%BA%E6%95%B0%E8%AF%8D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u57fa\u6570\u8bcd<\/a> (j\u012b sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) (Cardinal numerals) are used to express numbers, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%BA%8F%E6%95%B0%E8%AF%8D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5e8f\u6570\u8bcd<\/a> (x\u00f9 sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) (Ordinal numbers) are used to express a position in a series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">a. \u57fa\u6570\u8bcd Cardinal numbers include the following:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%B3%BB%E6%95%B0%E8%AF%8D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7cfb\u6570\u8bcd<\/a> (x\u00ec sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) constant numbers: \u96f6 (l\u00edng), \u534a (b\u00e0n), \u4e00 (y\u012b), \u4e8c (\u00e8r) \u4e24 (li\u01ceng, \u4e09 (s\u0101n), \u56db (s\u00ec), \u4e94 (w\u01d4) \u516d (li\u00f9), \u4e03 (q\u012b), \u516b (b\u0101), \u4e5d (ji\u01d4), \u5341 (sh\u00ed)\u3002<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%BD%8D%E6%95%B0%E8%AF%8D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4f4d\u6570\u8bcd<\/a> (w\u00e8i sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) digit numbers: \u5341 (sh\u00ed), \u767e (b\u01cei) \u5343 (qi\u0101n), \u4e07 (w\u00e0n), \u4ebf (y\u00ec)\u3002<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%A4%8D%E5%90%88%E6%95%B0%E8%AF%8D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u590d\u5408\u6570\u8bcd<\/a> (f\u00f9 h\u00e9 sh\u00f9 \u2018zero\u2019 \u96f6 (l\u00edng) is used between constant or digital numbers it is only added once, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>30050 = <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%89%E4%B8%87%E9%9B%B6%E4%BA%94%E5%8D%81&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e09\u4e07\u96f6\u4e94\u5341<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>50006 = <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%BA%94%E4%B8%87%E9%9B%B6%E5%85%AD&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e94\u4e07\u96f6\u516d<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/ban\/4320\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" g\u00e8 b\u00e0n p\u00edng gu\u01d2) one and a half apple<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u534a (b\u00e0n) can not be used with a numeral, for example, \u534a\u5343 (b\u00e0n qi\u0101n) \u2018half a thousand\u2019 and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%8D%8A%E4%B8%87&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u534a\u4e07<\/a> (b\u00e0n w\u00e0n) \u2018half of ten thousand\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one exception when \u534a (b\u00e0n) is found next to a numeral, in the chengyu <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%B9%B4%E8%BF%87%E5%8D%8A%E7%99%BE&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5e74\u8fc7\u534a\u767e<\/a> (ni\u00e1n gu\u00f2 b\u00e0n b\u01cei. In this situation, <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%8D%8A%E7%99%BE&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u534a\u767e<\/a> (b\u00e0n b\u01cei) means \u201850 years old\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Chinese, numbers can be divided into \u201c\u4e2a (g\u00e8), \u5341 (sh\u00ed), \u767e (b\u01cei), \u5343 (qi\u0101n) and \u4e07 (w\u00e0n)\u201d (a\/an, 10, 100, 1000, 10000). Digits are grouped into 4\u2019s and all numbers over \u201c\u4e07\u201d 10000, use \u4e07 as the unit; numbers over \u4ebf 1000000000, use \u4ebf as a unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5726\uff0c4832\uff0c9803 = \u4e94\u5343\u4e03\u767e\u4e8c\u5341\u516d<b>\u4ebf<\/b>\uff0c\u56db\u5343\u516b\u767e\u4e09\u5341\u4e8c<b>\u4e07<\/b>\uff0c\u4e5d\u5343\u516b\u767e\u96f6\u4e09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\n<h3>b. \u5e8f\u6570\u8bcd (x\u00f9 sh\u00f9 c\u00ed) Ordinal numbers<\/h3>\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5e8f\u6570\u8bcd (x\u00f9 sh\u00f9 c\u00ed)is always found with \u201c\u7b2c\u201d (d\u00ec) prefix indicating the ordinal number (first, second etc) or \u201c\u521d\u201d (ch\u016b) at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure (lunar calendar date)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/er\/945\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e8c<\/a> (\u00e8r) and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/liang\/1113\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e24<\/a> (li\u01ceng) both mean number \u20182\u2019, but the usages are different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u4e8c (\u00e8r) can be used as \u201cthe second\u201d without \u7b2c (d\u00ec), whereas \u4e24 (li\u01ceng) can not be used as an ordinal number.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%BA%8C%E6%A5%BC&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e8c\u697c<\/a> (\u00e8r l\u00f3u) the 2nd floor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%A4%E5%B1%82%E6%A5%BC&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e24\u5c42\u697c<\/a> (li\u01ceng c\u00e9ng l\u00f3u) two floors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exception is that \u4e24 (li\u01ceng) used to say 2 o\u2019clock: <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%A4%E7%82%B9%E9%92%9F&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e24\u70b9\u949f<\/a> (li\u01ceng di\u01cen zh\u014dng).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, when used before measure words, we will use \u4e24 (li\u01ceng), not \u4e8c (\u00e8r).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u4e24 (li\u01ceng) can be used as an \u2018approximate\u2019 number, which is similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/ji\/1909\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u51e0<\/a> (j\u01d0).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a
