Aside from remembering how to write them, writing \u2018beautiful\u2019 characters can be a challenge. Using the adjective \u2018beautiful\u2019 might seem strange, but there is a particular finesse that comes with writing Chinese characters that, when written correctly, can be beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I first began learning to write Chinese characters (yes, you\u2019ve heard my story a hundred times at least), they were mostly ugly. But when you\u2019ve written a character 40 times or more to help remember it, there\u2019s bound to be one that you can look upon proudly and say \u2018that\u2019s a beautiful character\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless you\u2019re using stroke animations to learn how to write, it can often be difficult to know which strokes to use and in which order. We\u2019ve covered both of these areas, in two articles Chinese Character Stroke Rules (And How To Break Them!)<\/a> and 12 Advanced Chinese Strokes to Help You Write Characters<\/a>. However, there\u2019s another area that really needs to be looked into, and that\u2019s character balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve probably heard me harp on about \u2018field\u2019 notebooks and if you\u2019re using our dictionary, you may have noticed that behind the characters, is a faint cross. These lines are basically guidelines, to show you how to keep your characters balanced and therefore beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance is an extremely important part of Chinese philosophy, essential to Traditional Chinese medicine, as well as aesthetically in the written language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are the \u2018rules\u2019 you need to follow when writing Chinese to ensure that your characters are balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The characters we’ve included in this post were taken from our Written Chinese Dictionary<\/a>, as well as a Chinese handwriting app, \u4e91\u7ae0\u4e66\u6cd5\u8bcd\u5178.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Left – Right<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1.1 Left – Right Proportion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Left \u2153 – Right \u2154<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This 1-2 ratio is used when the main stroke on the right side is larger than on the left. Some examples are \u4e00 , \u4e3f, \u4e5a and \u31c9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is a horizontal stroke ( \u4e00, \u4e5b, \u4eba) in the middle, the character shape will be a diamond \u25c7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is a horizontal stroke ( \u4e00, \u4e5b) in the top, and there is no radical with \u4e40 \u4e5a on the bottom, the character shape will be inverted trapezoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
