The heart radical can be written in two ways; either at the bottom of a character as in \u60f3 <\/a>(xi\u01ceng), \u5fd8<\/a> (w\u00e0ng) and \u6012<\/a> (n\u00f9) a squashed version of the character \u5fc3<\/a> (x\u012bn), or on the left side of the character like this: \u5fc4as in \u5feb<\/a> (ku\u00e0i), \u5fc6<\/a> (y\u00ec) and \u6015<\/a> (p\u00e0). This is a super skinny modification of \u5fc3 (x\u012bn) and is called \u7ad6\u5fc3\u65c1<\/a> (sh\u00f9 x\u012bn p\u00e1ng).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The radical of \u5fc3 (x\u012bn) is often present in characters relating to emotions, thoughts and other \u2018heart\u2019 related words. Here is some vocabulary that contains the \u5fc3  radical in both forms, and some emotionally charged sentences to try out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u60f3<\/a> (xi\u01ceng) to think \/ to believe \/ to suppose \/ to wish \/ to want \/ to miss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The character \u60f3 (xi\u01ceng) has multiple meaning such as to think, miss or believe something (or someone!). \u60f3 (xi\u01ceng) is composed of \u76f8<\/a> (xi\u00e0ng) meaning appearance and of course \u5fc3 (x\u012bn), together they create phonetics and meaning. However, the character \u76f8 (xi\u00e0ng) depicts a tree (\u6728<\/a> – m\u00f9) and an eye (\u76ee<\/a>– m\u00f9) suggesting the need to look and check for danger. The two characters together to produce \u60f3 (xi\u01ceng) could refer to examining the heart or mind (think, believe, hope).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The character of \u5fd8 (w\u00e0ng) features our \u5fc3 (x\u012bn) radical and the phonetic \u4ea1<\/a> (w\u00e1ng), which means to disappear or the death of something. Combining these two suggests that the mind is unable to function or is \u2018lost\u2019, coming to the final meaning of forget: \u5fd8 (w\u00e0ng).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top half of our character is probably familiar to those of you who read our previous article on \u5973\u5b57\u65c1\uff1aThe Female Radical<\/a>, as this is \u5974<\/a> (n\u00fa) meaning slave. The quite direct meaning of this character is not to be a slave to your heart and allow your anger to control you\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u89e6\u6012<\/a> (ch\u00f9 n\u00f9) provocation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This example sentence also contains the bigram \u611f\u5230<\/a> (g\u01cen d\u00e0o) that contains ‘\u5fc3\u5b57\u5e95’ (x\u012bn z\u00ec de), meaning to have a feeling or sense about something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not exactly mean that Autumn makes us feel down, but that it produces feelings of nostalgia as another year inevitably ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I would like to look at 1 character that in its simplified version, no longer contains the \u5fc3 radical. The character for love and affection \u7231<\/a> (\u00e0i) demonstrates a modern approach to the notion of love, focusing more on friendship and co-operation, than love. The traditional character \u611b (\u00e0i) is made up of three parts: \u2018breathe into\u2019, the \u2018heart\u2019 and \u2018gracious motion\u2019.
