Communities would live beside the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/jianghe\/7736\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6c5f\u6cb3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ji\u0101ng<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h\u00e9) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yangtze and the Yellow rivers, which now boast archeological findings of farm lands dating back to the 7th Century BCE.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the 4th Century BCE, walled communities were being built, and the first signs of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/lowdown-6-types-of-chinese-characters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primitate Chinese characters appear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By 2500 BCE, impressive technological advancements had been made, including the potter\u2019s wheel, production of jade into ornaments and jewellery and works made of copper. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These were some of the earliest inventions made by Chinese settlers and led the way to the advancements in technology that we still rely on and appreciate today.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China considers themselves to have four great Chinese inventions: paper, printing, magnetic compass and gunpowder, known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%9B%9B%E5%A4%A7%E5%8F%91%E6%98%8E&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u56db\u5927\u53d1\u660e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (s\u00ec d\u00e0 f\u0101 m\u00edng). Although the ketchup we know and love today\u00a0is certainly different to the one that was tried by the British around the 18th Century, taken home and copied. For a start, tomatoes weren\u2019t added till 1812, when scientist James Mease added them to his recipe. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018ketchup\u2019 is said to have come from the Hokkien Chinese, more commonly known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A6%8F%E5%BB%BA%E8%AF%9D&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u798f\u5efa\u8bdd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f\u00fa<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ji\u00e0n hu\u00e0)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018Fujianhua\u2019, word \u2018k\u00ea-tsiap\u2019 which described a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespruce.com\/ketchup-catsup-history-1807618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type of sauce made from fermented fish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (yummy!). Although the Hokkien translation has since died out, the pronunciation tsiap pronounced \u2018zh\u012b\u2019 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/zhi\/21647\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6c41<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in Mandarin is still used today to mean \u2018juice\u2019. Before the British arrived, Fujian sailors <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/life\/food\/2012\/05\/ketchup_s_chinese_origins_how_it_evolved_from_fish_sauce_to_today_s_tomato_condiment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took the sauce with them to Malaysia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Philippines along with their red rice wine, where it became part of their local cuisine. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/27696-viking-sunstone-shipwreck.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunstone refracted light to create a double image<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but when held at a certain angle, would create a single image, meaning the crystal was pointing east-west. When the bronze plate was moved, the \u2018spoon\u2019 would spin, eventually landing north-south, with the handle landing south. The lodestone aligned itself with the Earth\u2019s magnetic field allowing it to be used as a compass. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Ancient Chinese compass was originally used for telling the future, it was also used for navigation, although this was not recorded until the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/songchao\/12948\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5b8b\u671d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s\u00f2ng<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch\u00e1o)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Song Dynasty (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">960 &#8211; 1279<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), approximately 1000 years after its creation. Unlike the Viking\u2019s \u2018sunstone\u2019, it could be used in any kind of weather, as the \u2018spoon\u2019 would always point south.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. The ancient Chinese believed that earthquakes were caused by an imbalance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/the-mysterious-impact-food-can-have-on-the-body-according-to-tcm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yin and Yang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because of his scientific studies, Zhang was able to discover that earthquakes were actually a natural phenomenon, and developed his seismograph to react to the initial tremors of a quake. The seismograph would shake, causing a ball to fall from a dragon\u2019s mouth into the mouth of one of the toads. Because there were 8 dragons and 8 corresponding toads, the seismograph could also detect the direction from which the earthquake was coming. If the ball fell from the easterly dragon, then the quake was coming from the west. Sadly, due to superstitions of the Ancient Chinese, his invention was mostly feared, even when he proved the effectiveness of the detector when it \u2018predicted\u2019 an earthquake in 138 AD.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Boar bristles were still used up until 1948 when nylon bristles were introduced! Paper money also appeared sometime during the 700s.
