Previously, it was only listened to, but now strong aesthetic standards were being established and allowed people to express and experience the beauty of Opera in a different way. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who made this happen was Mei Lanfang.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei Lan Fang was a female impersonator, which sounds quite impressive for the turn of the 18th century, but it was normal at this time for men to take the female roles on stage. His grandfather, Mei Qiao Ling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%A2%85%E5%B7%A7%E7%8E%B2&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6885\u5de7\u73b2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (m\u00e9i qi\u01ceo l\u00edng) had performed Peking Opera in front of the Dowager Cixi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%85%88%E7%A6%A7%E5%A4%AA%E5%90%8E&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6148\u79a7\u592a\u540e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (c\u00ed x\u01d0 t\u00e0i h\u00f2u) of the Qing Dynasty <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/qingchao\/10434\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6e05\u671d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (q\u012bng ch\u00e1o) 1644 &#8211; 1911). In fact, in those days children of opera performers had no choice but to become part of the opera. Although Mei Lan Fang went to school when he was very young, many schools refused to take performer\u2019s children and so the opera was the only way to make a living.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training Begins<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"294\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mei-as-a-young-boy.jpeg?resize=294%2C171&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mei-as-a-young-boy.jpeg?w=294&amp;ssl=1 294w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.writtenchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Mei-as-a-young-boy.jpeg?resize=100%2C58&amp;ssl=1 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he turned 8, Mei Yutian set about finding a trustworthy teacher who could train Mei in the art of Peking Opera. He was initially taught by a former student of his grandfather\u2019s, but Mei showed little talent and the teacher refused to teach him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His family were extremely disappointed that Mei had not inherited his grandfather and father\u2019s talent, and was described by an aunt 50 years later as being \u2018inarticulate and bland looking\u2019 as a child. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, a teacher took on the role of training Mei in the operatic techniques needed to perform. He was patient and after only 2 years of training, prepared Mei for his first performance. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jia family tea house, now known as the Guanghe theatre <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%B9%BF%E5%92%8C%E6%A5%BC&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5e7f\u548c\u697c<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gu\u01ceng h\u00e9 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l\u00f3u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was a prestigious establishment that actors were honoured to play at. In 1904, aged 10, Mei made his stage debut, although few people found him impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he had been performing for some years, he joined a troupe, and the Mei family\u2019s prospects greatly improved.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei\u2019s constant diligence and dedication made up for his shortcomings. Later on, Mei also took on other \u2018dan\u2019 roles including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/huadan\/16505\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u82b1\u65e6 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hu\u0101<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d\u00e0n) a vivacious female role.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei stood out from other performers, and his ability to play any female role caused a stir in Beijing but marked him out as a star of Peking Opera.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His performance was different from traditional ones, and audiences were enthralled. After the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, women were able to visit the theatre, who particularly enjoyed the Dan roles played by Mei Lan Fang.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Mei performed more and became extremely popular, following the path of other Peking opera stars, such as Tan Xin Pei <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=Tan%20Xin%20Pei&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u8c2d\u946b\u57f9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (t\u00e1n x\u012bn p\u00e9i) in order to become \u2018King of Opera\u2019. The topics were about everyday subjects, such as feudal marriage. Although this modern type of opera did not survive, it was a sign of Mei\u2019s desire to redesign Peking Opera for a contemporary audience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1913, Mei was invited to perform in Shanghai and this was the first time he had travelled so far from home. He was given 2nd billing to Wang Fengqing the \u2018Lao Sheng\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/laosheng\/223486\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u8001\u751f<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (l\u01ceo sh\u0113ng) or \u2018elderly man\u2019 performer. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wang found out that some audience members had left once Mei had finished his performance. He told Mei that in future he would appear in the grand&nbsp;finale. Mei\u2019s friends suggested that in order to change Peking Opera for the future, he should choose Peking Opera Blues <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E7%A9%86%E6%9F%AF%E5%AF%A8&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u7a46\u67ef\u5be8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m\u00f9 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u0113 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zh\u00e0i)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his Grand Finale. 7 days later, Mei performed his new role and he became an overnight sensation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1915 to 1916, Mei Lan Fang was extremely successful&nbsp;and was able to support his family. He improved the hair and makeup styles of the Dan and made them more aesthetically pleasing for a contemporary audience. Mei Lan Fang was one of the first Dan performers to wear lipstick. He designed new costumes, especially for the character, Concubine Yu <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E8%99%9E%E5%A7%AC&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u865e\u59ec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y\u00fa j\u012b)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Finally, he created a completely new \u2018sword\u2019 dance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%89%91%E8%88%9E&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5251\u821e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ji\u00e0n <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">w\u01d4)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Concubine Yu to perform, which was completely unheard of before this point.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei Lan Fang the Icon<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even to this day, it is often asked how Mei Lan Feng managed to flawlessly move from handsome gentleman to elegant woman. He enthralled his audiences and was an \u2018icon\u2019 in China, even having a cigarette brand named after him. People would buy his photographs and pin them on their walls. He even had fans in the west who learned about Chinese culture and Peking Opera through him. He used lines from ancient poetry and questioned new and old ideologies. Although at this time people were reevaluating the old traditions, they still realised that they were important.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei Lan Fang had never received a formal education, and so relied on his friends to teach him. He spent a lot of time discussing art and literature with critics and writers and they were largely responsible for helping Mei become successful and they were an integral part of what would become \u2018The School of Mei\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His well educated friends would suggest operatic plays, then they would work together to produce a script, stage design, music and vocals. These people were experts in their fields, but Mei always had the final say.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing costumes, Mei would stand on a table dressed in one of the designs. The others would sit around and critique the design. Although they had communicated by letter for many years, because of their difference in education, Qi had never found it appropriate for them to meet in person. Qi had previously looked down on the art of Peking Opera until he was forced one evening to watch Mei perform. He began writing letters to Mei critiquing his performance and suggesting ways in which he could improve. His first performance at the 49th Street Theatre had a prologue presented in English to allow the audience to understand the storyline. It was said that his performance greatly influenced the German poet and playwright, Bertolt Brecht, who later created a drama with eastern form.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shanghai and Japanese Occupation<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Sino-Japanese war, Mei Lan Feng moved to Shanghai, and performed to raise money and awareness of the Battle of Songhu with his opera, \u2018Battle of the Jin Invaders\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%8A%97%E9%87%91%E5%85%B5&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6297\u91d1\u5175<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u00e0ng j\u012bn <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u012bng)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was at this time that Qi Rushan left his creative team, so Mei took charge and finalised all the musical compositions, dialogue and venues. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1937, Beijing and Shanghai were occupied by Japan and eventually, Mei Lan Feng and his troupe went to Hong Kong to perform and didn\u2019t return to Shanghai. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this point on, Mei Lan Feng refused to perform. He said that whilst Japan occupied China he had no desire to sing. As an act of defiance, Mei grew a moustache, meaning that he would no longer be able to play a \u2018Dan\u2019 role. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Japan occupied Hong Kong, he knew they would come looking for him. As a cultural icon of China, he would be forced to speak against his country. He was interviewed once and allowed to leave, at which point he left for Shanghai and was reunited with his family. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On returning to Shanghai he was told by Japanese officials that he would be a spokesperson for the Sino-Japanese friendship and that they were coming to take him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His family hatched a plan to keep Mei with them. When Mei took a vaccine, he was known for becoming very ill, often with a high temperature. So, he was given a vaccine before the soldiers arrived to take him, and he was so ill he was unable to go with them. Afraid that the fever would not be enough to prevent the soldiers from taking him, he had a bottle of sleeping tablets on the table next to him\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although his plan worked, Mei had not worked for a long time&nbsp;and had to sell his home in Beijing to support his family and troupe. Mei Lan Fang\u2019s friends went to his home to celebrate. On entering the room, Mei held a fan over his face. He suddenly whipped away the fan, and his moustache was gone!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October 1945, Mei performed again in the Meiqi Theatre in Shanghai <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%8A%E6%B5%B7%E7%BE%8E%E7%90%AA%E5%A4%A7%E6%88%8F%E9%99%A2&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u4e0a\u6d77\u7f8e\u742a\u5927\u620f\u9662<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u00e0ng<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h\u01cei m\u011bi <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">q\u00ed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d\u00e0 x\u00ec<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yu\u00e0n)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since he hasn\u2019t performed for many years, his voice was no longer as melodious, but the audience applauded just as loudly as before. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei decided to go back to Beijing and after 18 years, many things had changed. On his arrival in Beijing, Peking Opera performers waited at the station to welcome him back.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time, Mei became involved in many groups including becoming involved with government.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mei Lan Feng believed that for the first time he was performing for \u2018the people\u2019.
