The Chinese farmer story is one of many tao parables that can be interpreted in many ways. These stories are part of Taoism, or Daoism, as it is more commonly known in the west. <\/span>Taoism is a long-standing religion in China<\/span><\/a> known for its philosophies and promotion of a harmonious lifestyle. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The religion concentrates on the unity and contrast of opposites known as Yin and Yang. Some of the main elements of Taoism are to achieve a union with nature, being virtuous and development of the self.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taoist parables, such as the story about the farmer, <\/span>were written to teach people moral or religious lessons<\/span><\/a> in life. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u585e\u7fc1\u5931\u9a6c comes from the idiom <\/span>\u585e\u7fc1\u5931\u9a6c\uff0c\u7109\u77e5\u975e\u798f<\/span><\/a> (s\u00e0i <\/span>w\u0113ng<\/span> sh\u012b <\/span>m\u01ce,<\/span> \u0101n<\/span> zh\u012b<\/span> f\u0113i <\/span>f\u00fa)<\/span> that translates to<\/span> \u2018the old man lost his horse, but it all turned out for the best\u2019. The English version of the story is often translated to \u2018<\/span>Maybe, Said the Farmer\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              English Translation of the Chinese Farmer Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
              1. 1. Once upon a time, there was an old farmer, called \u2018Sai Weng\u2019, who lived in the frontier area.  <\/span><\/li>
              2. 2. One day his horse ran away. <\/span><\/li>
              3. 3. Upon hearing the news, his neighbours came to visit. \u201cSuch bad luck,\u201d they said, sympathetically.<\/span><\/li>
              4. 4. \u201cMaybe,\u201d the farmer replied with a smile.<\/span><\/li>
              5. 5. Several months later, the horse returned unexpectedly, bringing with it another fine horse. <\/span><\/li>
              6. 6. \u201cHow wonderful,\u201d the neighbours exclaimed.<\/span><\/li>
              7. 7. \u201cMaybe,\u201d replied the old man, who did not seem very happy.<\/span><\/li>
              8. 8. The old man had a son who liked riding horses. <\/span><\/li>
              9. 9. The following day, his son tried to ride the untamed horse, but was thrown off and broke his leg. <\/span><\/li>
              10. 10. Once again, the neighbours came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.<\/span><\/li>
              11. 11. \u201cMaybe,\u201d answered the farmer, who didn\u2019t seem very worried.<\/span><\/li>
              12. 12. Later, war breaks out at the border and military officials went to the village to draft young men into the army. Most of them were killed or seriously injured in the war. <\/span><\/li>
              13. 13. However, because of the broken leg, the old man\u2019s son was unable to fight in the war.<\/span><\/li>
              14. 14. So, \u2018good\u2019 luck can turn into a \u2018bad\u2019 thing, and a \u2018bad thing\u2019 can become \u2018good\u2019 luck, and it is hard to see how the change occurred. <\/span><\/li>
              15. 15. The chengyu \u201c\u585e\u7fc1\u5931\u9a6c\u201d cames from this story and is always used with \u201c\u7109\u77e5\u975e\u798f\u201d  meaning \u2018a blessing in disguise\u2019. <\/span><\/li>
              16. 16. It is always used to express the sentiment that \u201c\u2018bad\u2019 things can become \u2018good\u2019 things\u201d or \u201cthough suffering loss at the moment, profit may come later because of it\u201d.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                Interpretations<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                The following are interpretations of the Taoist story of the Chinese farmer:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                1. – The nothing is \u2018bad\u2019 luck or \u2018good\u2019 luck, but it depends on your interpretation of those events. <\/span>Source<\/span><\/a><\/li>
                2. – \u201cThe farmer’s tale captures many of those. In short, it reminds people that it’s best not to get too upset — or attached — to what happens to us. Even something that seems dark and confounding can turn out to be an opportunity when looked on in hindsight.\u201d <\/span>Source<\/span><\/a><\/li>
                3. – The line between good and bad is blurry and therefore who can say what is \u2018good\u2019 and what is \u2018bad\u2019. Based on Taoist beliefs on the balance of nature, everything has both \u2018bad\u2019 and \u2018good\u2019 parts equally.                 4. – My own interpretation is probably the most similar to #3: I see the farmer\u2019s story as being about cause and effect. Going back to the balance of Yin and Yang, eventually, everything in the story was balanced again. Although seemingly \u2018bad\u2019 things happened, the universe realigned itself and \u2018good\u2019 things also occurred.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
