When I first started to learn Mandarin, I really couldn\u2019t get my head around the idea that there wasn\u2019t really a word for yes in Chinese. The ones that I initially picked up and used were \u662f\u7684 (sh\u00ec de) and \u5bf9 (du\u00ec), but there are quite a few more that you can use in order to respond to a question, agree with or give permission to someone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below are just some of the ways that you can say yes in Chinese:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using Yes to Respond to a Question <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The simplest way to use \u2018yes\u2019 is to confirm a \u2018yes-no\u2019 type question:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u662f<\/b> \/ <\/b>\u662f\u7684<\/b> \/ <\/b>\u662f\u554a<\/b><\/a> (<\/b>sh\u00ec \/ sh\u00ec de \/ sh\u00ec a) Yes<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just like in English, there are other variations of \u2018yes\u2019 that can be used to answer a question, such as sure, certainly and \u2018right\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although, the literal translation of <\/span>\u53ef\u4ee5<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>k\u011b<\/span> y\u01d0) is \u2018can\u2019 it is often used in Chinese to say \u2018yes\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
