Whilst there are various different types of Chinese opera, in the modern-day, Beijing or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/intro\/arts\/chinese-opera.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peking Opera is the most common type<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of opera and is said to be an amalgamation of the different opera styles in China.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese operas are usually based on historical or mythical stories from the past and are a dramatic combination of music, singing, martial arts, and acrobatics.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For foreigners, and even contemporary Chinese people, the meaning behind a Chinese opera often goes misunderstood, however, many Jingju actors often have years of training before being allowed to perform on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peking Opera <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/jingju\/6406\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u4eac\u5267<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (j\u012bng<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">j\u00f9) became popular at the end of the Qing Dynasty when the general public also became interested in opera. In the early 20th century, Peking Opera first went abroad to Japan, the United States, and Russia. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being part of an opera troupe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%88%8F%E7%8F%AD%E5%AD%90&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u620f\u73ed\u5b50<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x\u00ec <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u0101n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> zi)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often something that is passed down through a family, so if your father and grandfather were involved in opera, then you were expected to join also. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theatrestyles.blogspot.tw\/2014\/10\/peking-or-beijing-opera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training for children started at a young age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was often brutal, studying gymnastics, acrobatics, martial arts, singing and acting techniques from 5 am every morning. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peking Opera Conventions<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theatrestyles.blogspot.tw\/2014\/10\/peking-or-beijing-opera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movement, gesture, and glance has symbolic meaning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Peking opera and is based on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imitation or mime <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/mofang\/7181\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u6a21\u4eff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (m\u00f3<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f\u01ceng). A table and chair are the most common prop on the stage, although sometimes there will be a background to suggest a location. The method of wearing makeup to suggest a character\u2018s personality is known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/lianpu\/17502\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u8138\u8c31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (li\u01cen<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">p\u01d4) or &#8216;the picture of hearts&#8217; because the audience should instantly know what kind of person the character is. For this reason, the makeup worn by each character takes years of mastery by the actor playing the role. It is necessary for him to have a deep understanding of his character in order to make up his face. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although in some cases, characters may just have one color, a dot, or a line of makeup, some characters have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/intro\/arts\/beijing_opera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intricately painted wings of butterflies, swallows,<\/span><\/a> and bats on their eyes and cheeks. Similar<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Peking opera costumes, the color<\/span> of makeup is extremely important: red symbolizes<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> loyalty, black for honesty, and white for cunning. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music and Singing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the l<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theatrestyles.blogspot.tw\/2014\/10\/peking-or-beijing-opera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anguage used in Beijing opera is an old form of Mandarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that originates from Zhongyuan Mandarin \u4e2d\u539f (zh\u014dng<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yu\u00e1n).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two different styles of music in Peking opera: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xipi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/xipi\/78665\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u897f\u76ae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x\u012b<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">p\u00ed)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erhuang <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/erhuang\/3577\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u4e8c\u9ec4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e8r<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hu\u00e1ng)<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xipi is sprightly and lively and is often paired with lyrics, narration, and scenic parts of the opera. Erhuang is slower and deep and is often used to express melancholia and distressing situations. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is very little difference between these musical styles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, except for Erhuang being in a slightly lower tone. A performance will usually begin with a flute accompanying singing.
