Furthermore, studies say that it\u2019s much easier for children to learn than for adults, especially when learning a second language. Babies brains are able to absorb more information than adults. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst some parents find that multilingual children begin speaking 3-6 months later than \u2018usual\u2019, most kids learning another language have superior reading and writing skills. In general, children who can speak more than one language have <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.multilingualchildren.org\/getting_started\/pro_con.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better analytical and social skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese are \u2018tonal\u2019 languages, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2015\/11\/tonal-languages-linguistics-mandarin\/415701\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who speak these languages are more likely to identify musical pitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mandarin has 5 tones (or 4 and a neutral tone), a long flat tone, a rising tone, a dipped tone, a dropping tone and a neutral tone and these help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/the-definitive-guide-to-pinyin-chinese-pronunciation\/\">indicate the meaning of a character when spoken<\/a>. When romanised, the words for &#8216;hug&#8217; and &#8216;precious&#8217; have the same sound &#8216;bao&#8217;. however when spoken in Chinese they are divided by their own tones, &#8216;hug&#8217; has the downward tone &#8216;b\u00e0o&#8217;, whereas &#8216;precious&#8217; has a dipping tone &#8216;b\u01ceo&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children who are multilingual usually test higher in subjects such as maths and English. Studies also suggest that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pandatree.com\/reason_foreign_language\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the longer a kid has studied a language, the better they might score<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. For example, unlike other languages, learning to count is simple once you have learned 1-10. There is a very logical process to create another number with the existing ones. For example 12 is 10 + 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/shier\/550\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5341\u4e8c<\/a> (sh\u00ed\u00a0\u00e8r) and 40 is 4 + 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/sishi\/895\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u56db\u5341<\/a> (s\u00ec sh\u00ed). It\u2019s also easy to remember days of the week and months, and they are just a word of week or month with a number, for example, January is \u2018one-month\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/yiyue\/1187\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e00\u6708<\/a> (y\u012b yu\u00e8). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plurals are literally non-existent in the Chinese language making it slightly easier than learning English! If you want to refer to more than one of something, you just add the number or determiner. For example \u20182 pencils\u2019 would be <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E4%B8%A4%E6%94%AF%E9%93%85%E7%AC%94&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u4e24\u652f\u94c5\u7b14<\/a> (li\u01ceng zh\u012b qi\u0101n b\u01d0) \u20182 (classifier) pencil\u2019 or \u2018lots of paper\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E5%BE%88%E5%A4%9A%E7%BA%B8&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u5f88\u591a\u7eb8<\/a> (h\u011bn du\u014d zh\u01d0) \u2018very much paper\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it\u2019s easy to create new words from ones you already know. Although you can\u2019t just make up new words and hope for the best, learning new words is way easier than with other languages. For example, an aeroplane is \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/feiji\/490\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u98de\u673a<\/a>\u2019 (f\u0113i j\u012b) \u2018flying &#8211; machine\u2019, a zebra is <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/banma\/19260\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6591\u9a6c<\/a> (b\u0101n m\u01ce) \u2018stripped-horse\u2019 and balloon is <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/qiqiu\/9559\/3\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6c14\u7403<\/a> (q\u00ec qi\u00fa) \u2018air-ball\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there are lots of sentence patterns that make it easier to construct sentences. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/simple-guide-to-chinese-sentences-structure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the subject + verb + object pattern is consistently used within Chinese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is the basis of a sentence:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/#sk=%E6%88%91%E7%88%B1%E4%BB%96&amp;svt=pinyin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u6211\u7231\u4ed6<\/a> (w\u01d2 \u00e0i t\u0101) I love him<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S+V+O<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. As children will mostly be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/learn-to-read-with-these-20-chinese-pictographs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning pictographs and characters that have clearer visual meaning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, characters become mini pictures. For instance, animals such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/yang\/11268\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7f8a<\/a> (y\u00e1ng), <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/niu\/8112\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u725b<\/a> (ni\u00fa) and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/ma\/2099\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u9a6c<\/a> (m\u01ce) make it easy to image real animals. More complex characters, such as the one for cat <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/mao\/15461\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u732b<\/a> (m\u0101o) shows an animal on the left side combined with a field <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/tian\/6417\/1\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u7530 <\/a>(ti\u00e1n) and the grass radical <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.writtenchinese.com\/worddetail\/cao\/73614\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u8279<\/a> (c\u01ceo). These two characters combined actually provide the pronunciation \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mi\u00e1o &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m\u0101o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 to the character, but these components also allow the creation of a story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can make learning characters a lot more fun and easier for children to both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.writtenchinese.com\/secrets-to-remembering-exactly-how-to-write-a-chinese-character\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remember the characters by creating stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and writing by constructing pictures for each one. Children are full of creative and imaginative games, and creating mnemonics will be a cinch for them!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.
