MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) created an algorithm that calculated the most often seen Chinese characters in written Chinese in order of how frequently they are used.<\/p>\n

Chinese Characters, a Quick Overview<\/h2>\n

There are tens of thousands of Chinese characters, but since the symbols that make up written Chinese has developed over thousands of year, the exact number is unknown. In 2004, the \u5f02\u4f53\u5b57\u5b57\u5178<\/a> (y\u00ec t\u01d0 z\u00ec z\u00ec di\u01cen) Chinese Dictionary included a record 106,230 Chinese characters, but only a small amount of those are used today.<\/p>\n

In modern-day schools, children are expected to learn 3500 characters<\/a>, but many know more than 5000 by the time they graduate. In mainland China, students learn simplified characters, while traditional Chinese characters<\/a> are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao.<\/p>\n

Difference Between Characters and Words<\/h2>\n

One character doesn\u2019t make one Chinese word. A word is usually made up of 2 or more characters, so learning these 150 characters means you actually know many more words.<\/p>\n

For example, in #11 in this Chinese character list, \u8fd9 can be combined with several other characters in the list to make words. For example, \u8fd9\u4e2a, \u8fd9\u91cc, \u8fd9\u6837, \u8fd9\u4e48, and \u8fd9\u4e9b.  <\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve looked at the new HSK 2021 system<\/a>, over 9 levels, you\u2019ll study 3000 characters which equate to 11092 words.<\/p>\n
